Chapter 65: Apex Predator of the Underworld

  Brrrt Brrrt

Regulus moved his hand, and the earth parted ways for him. He dug his way deep inside, swimming on the earth, heading towards the depth.

  Brak, Plop

He finally reached a small tunnel, big enough to fit a crawling Molrret, too small for anything larger. Regulus entered the tunnel, its walls were wet and the air was filled with various smells. It was not a natural tunnel, part of a cave system — it was a Molrret-made one, part of a complex system of tunnels that span a wide range of area, bigger than the county of Hazen. It’s where most of the Molrrets in his herd spent their time.

Regulus sniffed the air, and in seconds, his brain was loaded with information. Just from a single sniff, he found out the updated layout of the complex tunnels system, the amount of Molrrets living near the place he currently was, and places of interest that the Molrrets found. He sat in a spot for a while, organizing the newly acquired pile of information, finding out which information he currently needed or any urgent information he might have to tackle first.

Luckily, there was nothing urgent, so he could focus on finding food for the gang. Better still, the herd had located various sources of underground mushroom fields, edible tree roots, and wild vegetables. Regulus pissed, spreading the order for any Molrrets that smelled it to start harvesting these spots and transporting them to the gang.

Regulus then traversed the tunnel complex, sniffing all the way, looking for new information he had not smelled yet. Due to the nature of their communication system, there were areas in the complex where information stored in the smell differed. Whenever Regulus found the difference in this information, Regulus pissed, updating the information so it would match with everything he knew at that point. This was how Regulus and his herd kept up to date with each other. Soon enough, he stumbled upon information that he really wanted to know — the location of a giant creature, a perfect source of protein and nutrition for the gang and the herd.

Regulus grinned. He inhaled as much air as his lung allowed, and he let out an ultrasonic shout, notifying every single Molrrets that heard it that a hunt would begin.

  ******

Giant Burrowing Worm, a humongous underground creature that lived deep underground, one of the apex predators of the underworld. On average, they were five-meters tall and thirty-meters long, some could even reach a hundred meters long. Their outer skin was made of hard keratin carapaces, second only to a dragon in terms of toughness. They had no eyes, and they had breathing holes all over their body that they could cover with their armored skin, making them practically had no weak spots. They traversed by rotating around like a drill, creating giant tunnels and caves on their wake. This was also how they fed themselves, eating everything that came across them when they were travelling.

One such majestic creature was currently sleeping in a cave of their own making, coiling its huge and long body, creating an impregnable fortress. Those who walked near it could feel gusts of wind blowing from its many breathing holes. Nothing could bother its slumber — except for a dragon… and Molrrets.

  Brrrt Brrrt

  Rumble Rumble

The earth shook, trembled, quaked. But the worm did not mind any of it. Even if the ceiling above him caved, it still would not be enough to kill it. So it continued its slumber.

  Pop Pop Pop

Various holes appeared from the ceiling. Molrrets head popped out of those holes. They sniffed the air, and they smelled it, the distinct smell of a giant burrowing worm — they found their target. They pulled their heads back in. and then…

… piss rain down from the holes.

The piss hit the worm’s armored body — and melted it with how acidic they were. Of course killing such a mighty creature with just piss was borderline impossible. But it was enough to hurt it, enough to wake it from its slumber. The beast pulled its head from the coil of its body — and it shrieked in pain

  KYAAAAAAAAAK

With how much air in its massive body, the shriek was more than enough to cause a massive earthquake just from the shockwave. The loud noise hurt the Molrrets’ ears, made them skittered away to safety — but it did not stop the acidic piss from raining on top of the giant worm.

  Sizzzzz

The piss that fell on its body continued to corrode its armor. Some managed to seep into the muscle underneath the armor, or entered the body from its breathing holes, and it was burning from the inside.

  KYAAAAAAK

Unable to resist the pain any longer, it uncoiled itself and started to rotate its body. Hitting one of the cavern walls headfirst, penetrating it, drilling itself away from the acidic piss rain…

… and all went according to plan.

  ******

Regulus was waiting on a small tunnel. He played with a copper Azul to stave off boredom. Twirling it with his fingers, rubbing its texture, flipping it to the air with his thumb. Then he heard it…

  KYAAAAAAAK

The sound of their plan working out. This was not the first time Regulus and his herd had hunted a Giant Burrowing Worm. From all their combined experiences, they knew how to hurt it, how to exploit its habit. Similar to Molrrets, a giant burrowing worm did not really care which direction it went. However, there was a set direction where it would dig after waking up.

Due to it sleeping by coiling its body, one can predict where its head would go when it woke up — 180 degrees from where it rested. A method where it could immediately dug while uncoiling its body in the process.

  KYAAAAAAK

  RUMBLE RUMBLE

The earth shook, and the quake was getting stronger. Regulus grinned, their hunt had gone as planned.

  RUMBLE CRASH

A giant gaping hole appeared in front of him — it was the worm’s mouth, opening to eat everything in its path. Regulus just sat there, letting himself be eaten.

  RUMBLE RUMBLE

The rumbling continued, the worm continued to dig straight, running away from the pain. Little did it know, more pain would soon come.

  ********

Musty, that was just how it was in a ruin. A small girl was walking around the ruined city, accompanied by four hooded figures. Her body was that of a ten-year old girl, but she had lived much longer than her body suggested. Ten times, twenty times, who really knew. Not even the girl herself knew her own age. She had lived for a very long time, and most of them spent underground, where time did not matter.

The girl walked, crossing paths with a few undeads on her way. Ancient and powerful undeads. These undead had existed long before she was created. A product of ancient magic and grudges, each one of them were powerful being equal to a living knight or a paladin. These undead had roamed these ruins for a long time, they had lost their purpose — the only thing left was their aggressiveness towards any living being. The girl walked, unbothered by the undead that surrounded her. And they too, ignored her and her retinue. For she was not exactly a living being either.

Her name was Homi. an artificial human, created by two necromancers who loved each other, but unable to sire a child due to the path they took. For those who studied how to manipulate life and death were cursed to be unable to bore life with their bodies. And so, the two did what any necromancer would — They defied the natural order of thin. And that was how Homi was created, an artificial soul put in a sewed body of multiple dead girls.

But that was a tale from long ago. Her parents had long gone, hunted down by those who were disgusted by them. She herself had to run away deep underground, escaping the inquisition. And now, in her long travel, she ended up in a ruined kingdom, buried deep underground due to time and dust.

She had spent quite a while in this place, learning its layout and history. She discovered that this place used to be the kingdom of Hazen, long before they were conquered by Azalia. Most of the undead here were created due to the grudge of one person, the former king of Hazen, who was now a powerful undead himself — An Ancient King, powerful enough to challenge a squad of knights by itself. Luckily for her, due to her constitution, the Ancient King just ignored her, thinking of her as one of his subjects.

Right now, the ancient kingdom of Hazen was the safest place for her to be. It was so deep underground that most humans would not reach it. The undead were not only ignoring her, they actually fought off any underground creatures that came here. In a way, the only threat to her in this place was boredom, and she might decide to leave this place soon, as she learned almost everything the place had to offer.

  RUMBLE RUMBLE

An earthquake, a very dangerous yet an uncommon occurrence in the underground. Homi’s worry was only one thing, whether this was a natural earthquake or one done by a passing underground creature. If it was the latter, then it would pass soon. If it was the first… then it was trouble, for there was no way to know if the place she was in would cave in or not.

  BRAAK

  KYAAAAAK

But her worry was short-lived. It was an earthquake due to a giant burrowing worm. The creature burst through one of the cavern walls, shrieking loudly enough to pop one’s eardrum. Luckily she could easily replace them. All she needed to do was stay out of the worm’s path. Either it would go away on its own or the Ancient King and his army of undead deal with it…

…Or so she thought. Her worry rose back up like an undead. The giant burrowing worm, famous for its tough armor, was injured badly. Most of its carapace was torn or slashed apart. Its green blood pouring all over the place. Only a dragon could easily do those to a giant burrowing worm. And if that was the case, not even the Ancient King could handle such beings.

But then, she saw it, with her eyes that could see the essence of souls — A soul, protected by giant Molrrets claws, followed by trails of vengeful ghosts which all wailed in fear, and the pure spirits of children all singing hymns. There was also one soul following it, a soul that should not exist in theory.

“Wha… how could it be… is that even possible?” Homi was in disbelief. Her own existence was one that was theoretically impossible… but now that she saw another being who was also theoretically impossible… she finally understood — nothing is impossible.
