Chapter 5: A Fool’s Errand

For this long journey, Torii had prepared ample food and water. On the first day, Torii only traveled about ten kilometers before night fell.

Firstly, the road was difficult to traverse, and secondly, his body could not withstand prolonged exertion.

He would rest when tired and eat tree fruits or dried food when hungry. Fortunately, Butterfree was there to accompany him, so he was not so lonely, and it could provide some care in dangerous situations.

Torii's destination was Steport City, a rge city, which was the closest city to Petalburg Town, but even so, it was a week's walk away.

Torii wanted to go to Dewford Town first to take the Breeder's exam, but although Dewford Town was also in the Hoenn region, it was too far from where Torii was. It would take several months to walk there, and besides, Torii could not possibly cross the ocean on foot.

Therefore, Steport City's harbor was a pce Torii had to go.

Taking a boat was the fastest way for him to get to Dewford Town.

Walking was boring, especially in the wild, facing unpredictable weather and dangers that could appear at any time, but Torii persevered through it all.

Without Trainer qualifications, he could not even stay at the Pokémon Center when he reached poputed areas, and as for hotels, his limited savings did not allow him to do so.

These were all prepared for the Breeder's exam, and Torii could not waste them.

  "Spsh."

Passing by a ke, Torii took out his water bag, filled it with some water, and drank it hastily.

"Heh." Wiping the remaining water stains from his mouth, Torii smiled. After several days of travel, he was finally about to reach Steport City.

This was Torii's first long trip outside, and he was a little uncomfortable, but fortunately, he had overcome everything and was familiar with this feeling.

Along the way, Torii would occasionally pick some brightly colored wild fruits, not for the purpose of filling his stomach. If these things were processed, they would have considerable benefits for certain Pokémon, and if prepared properly, they could be sold for a small sum of money, which was very important to Torii.

In addition to the Day Care, Breeders probably did things like this as well.

  Fp fp...

Several Taillow flew over and attacked Butterfree, who was standing on Torii's shoulder. Torii was used to this. Taillow and Wurmple were natural enemies, and even if Wurmple evolved, this situation would not change.

If these two Pokémon were on different sides, it was indeed easy for conflicts to occur, as in the current situation, unless they were both captured and their retionship could be slightly improved under the guidance of the Trainer.

The beaks of the four flying Taillow fshed with white light as they flew toward Butterfree and Torii. They were using Peck, a very basic move. Without thinking much, Torii instructed Butterfree to resist.

A Silver Wind ced with paralyzing powder was blown out by Butterfree, directly blocking the Taillow's path. The levels of the two were too different. Watching the Taillow weakly fpping their wings, Torii and Butterfree did not stay long and left the area directly.

Taillow did not know what it meant to give up. If Torii and Butterfree continued to stay, they would be met with relentless attacks.

  "Good job, Butterfree."

Torii, who quickly ran to another fork in the road, praised Butterfree. Butterfree had helped him a lot these days, especially with the String Shot move, which had repeatedly helped Torii solve difficult situations.

  "Goo goo~"

Butterfree cried out gently, seemingly very happy with Torii's praise.

"Let's continue moving forward." Patting the dust off his body, Torii felt that he was not far from Steport City. To be honest, Torii wanted to have a big meal now. He didn't need any delicious dishes, just hot food would be enough.

Having eaten dried food and tree fruits for several days, Torii was a little tired of it, which made him regret not bringing cooking utensils with him.

  ...

"Strange, why is there a Poochyena here..."

Suddenly, a Pokémon in the shape of a small dog appeared in Torii's vision. With its slightly green body and yellow markings on its face, it was clear that it was a Poochyena.

Looking at the Poochyena who was staring bnkly, Torii shook his head. Poochyena were considered rare Pokémon, and their evolved form, Mightyena, were also good. Unfortunately, with Torii's financial resources, he was currently unable to care for a second Pokémon.

Besides, he did not have any spare Poké Balls at the moment.

Therefore, the appearance of Poochyena only made Torii slightly surprised, but Torii did not regret it. His situation dictated that he could not capture too many Pokémon. Given his circumstances, he simply could not take good care of each one.

High potential and easy to care for were the standards for Torii to capture Pokémon now.

If Torii wanted to achieve something, he not only had to have superior knowledge, but his Pokémon's strength could not be too weak. Otherwise, how could he talk about enabling everyone at the Azure Abode to pursue their dreams?

Allowing everyone at the Azure Abode to have the right to choose their own lives was Torii's greatest wish. He had already regarded the Azure Abode as his family and everyone there as his retives. He really did not want everyone to spend their lives in a daze.

But Torii also knew how difficult it was. It was ten times or even more difficult than supporting the Azure Abode orphanage. Providing so many children with excellent conditions, how could it be so easy?

Torii was no longer the ignorant person he had been when he first arrived. An ordinary Trainer's qualification alone cost 100,000 yuan, which was already a long-term expense for the Azure Abode.

And this was only the basics. Beginner Pokémon, expenses for caring for Pokémon, costs for treating Pokémon, and so on, all required money.

Therefore, even a family with a good financial situation would not dare to support so many children to become Trainers and boldly pursue their dreams and lives.

But Torii intended to work towards it. The Azure Abode was Grandma Oran's effort, and Torii had always respected the elderly woman who had taken such good care of him.

Therefore, the Azure Abode had always been an object of Torii's care. Moreover, in his opinion, his dream was not a fool's errand.

Torii just wanted to give himself a goal, a motivation.

Every time he thought of his responsibilities, Torii would sigh deeply, and then think of the protagonists in those novels he had read, each of whom was free from burdens and extremely carefree, which was really enviable.

"Even if it's a fool's errand, one must put in a good effort while living in this world, don't you think so, Butterfree."

Bypassing the Poochyena, Torii, walking on the forest path, looked at the sunlight in the sky and smiled. He had always firmly believed that if life did not have a definite goal, then what was the point of living? So even if it was something that seemed impossible to succeed in the eyes of others, he wanted to try it.

"Goo?" Butterfree, who was flying beside him, cried out in confusion, not understanding what Torii was talking about, which made Torii ugh heartily.
