The Brew

Viena is walking around the city with Lisabelle. Her bunny ears headband and dangling earrings are swinging in motion with her jumpy steps. Often distracted, she always stopped abruptly and drags Lisabelle with her to whatever caught her attention. If Lisabelle hadn't taken a hold of her hand, she would surely be lost in a blink of an eye.

Lisabelle scolds her constantly, worrying that Viena might develop a bad habit from being overly curious about even the smallest bit of things. However, there's not a slight of compin ever shown on Lisabelle's face. Despite her nagging, Lisabelle hardly ever says no to whatever Viena wants and readily answer any question she asked.

"It's almost noon and we are still halfway to the cathedral. Come on, Vivi, you can look around again on our way home. Your dad is waiting."

"Okay! Let's see the parasol making ter then!"

Fifteen minutes ter, Viena and Lisabelle arrived at the cathedral. The clock tower near the small artificial ke in the cathedral ground shows a half past ten. Realizing that they were thirty minutes te from the promised time, they decided to make it a running competition. Clearly, there is no way Lisabelle could lose given her superior physique and athletic skill. Thus, to keep it interesting for Viena, she keeps their distance close to nurture the sense of competition within the little girl.

"Huft! Huft! I . . . I win! Haha!" Lisabelle pretending to be out of breath.

"Huft! Hoek - That's . . . cheating!" Viena holds her mouth, almost throwing up.

  "Hah! Says the loser!"

  "Huft . . .! Huft . . .! You are wearing good boots!"

When they are busy mocking each other, suddenly, Mi came out from the Healing House, a building in the cathedral complex which Randia and the other medevists work in. She is carrying clean clothes in a basket, presumably for treating patients undergoing surgery.

"Oh! Viena! It's been a while! What are you doing here?"

"Mi! Papa asked me to come today! Is he inside?"

"I don't think so. He said he was going for a talk with the dean just a moment ago. And uh, this is . . .?"

Mil turns her attention to Lisabelle. Lisabelle greets her with a smile and a quick bow.

  "She's my sister, Lisabelle!"

"Nice to meet you, Mil. I'm just here to accompany this midget. Please don't mind me and feel free to go on about."

"Oh my! I didn't know Lord Ran has two daughters . . . Mmhm! She looks mature and sensible. Sadly, I'm on an errand now, so I can't py with you. Why don't you go inside while you wait for your father?"

Mil walks away as she bids farewell to Viena and Lisabelle. Now, the two enter the building and are heading for the healing chamber where Randia usually works. During the walk, Lisabelle asked a few things to Viena about working as a medevist. Thus, she told her the most memorable moments when she helped her father treating a patient.

The room is near the backside of the cathedral and is hardly noticeable with all the people going in and out of the building. However, ever since Randia was put on duty there, now it's impossible to miss given the crowd lining up outside the room. In the short amount of time he serves in the Cathedral, people have flocked to see Randia for cure. They are mostly recurring patients or the patients' retives who have trusted his credibility.

  ". . . And here we are! Papa's room!"

"It's packed with people, although not as much as the those near the front door."

"Of course! The rooms near the front door belong to the top guys! They are all old men with lots of working years! Also, they have almost a dozen assistants to help her treat multiple people at the same time!"

"Wow, they must be rich folk."

"I hope so! The work is tiring that sometimes they even fought with family member of the patient! Also, medical ingredients cost a lot you know. Nobody wants to be a medevist if all there's to it is just working hard with no rewards, and then everyone will go sick!"

"Hm. Nicely said. I agree with you," Lisabelle brushed Viena's hair, making her bandana wiggles.

Then, Viena knocks the door, calling for Wilrd. The man, recognizing Viena's voice, opens the door to let her in. However, before they can exchange any words, suddenly a screaming was heard from inside the room. It startles everyone, including the patients waiting outside, making them reluctant to stay in line.

  "What's happening?"

"Oh, nothing. It's just . . . there's someone new here. This might be the first time you see each other."

Viena peeked inside and found Laura half-standing on a chair with a proud face, holding a metal plier dripping with blood. A man is covering his mouth, sobbing hard on the patient's bed. Then, the sound of the tooth dropped into the metal container wakes Viena up from her daze.

  "I-It's the purple dy!"

"Hnnngg! As I thought! You are so adorable!"

  "H-Help me, Lily!"

  "Ugh . . . ."

Viena is held hostage as Laura hold her in her p and keep kissing and smooching her cheek. Meanwhile, Lisabelle couldn't do anything since she was busy cleaning the tools and dirty clothes, as Wilrd tends the patient.

"Why am I being the one stuck doing chores?!" Lisabelle snaps, and rambles with Laura, startling the patient.

The patient, looking bothered, whispered to Wilrd.

"T-They are surely lively, aren't they?"

  "Sigh . . . Apologize, ma'am."

Wilrd, who was pushed to his limit, finally had enough. He kicked all of them out of the room from the backdoor. The three apologized and bowed profusely, but only to had Wilrd smmed the door shut. Not long after, Laura burst out ughter and followed by Viena and Lisabelle who are giggling. Afterwards, she took the two to the cathedral park.

They spend their time pying around. First, they are feeding the birds. When Lisabelle thought that it's finally getting normal, suddenly some of the birds show strange behavior. One of them are getting extremely aroused and keeps trying to mate with others, while another is either rolling on the ground, or spinning around.

  "W-What's wrong with them?"

"I mixed something fun in the bread! Tee-hee!" Laura giggles mischievously.

  "T-That's cruel!" Lisabelle protested.

"Bah! Rex! It's nothing dangerous! They will be normal in five minutes. Fun fact, this thing happens so often in the wild. Just like cats pying with catnip or birds going on feeding frenzy thanks to bushes berries. Oh, also, deer are often found munching on red amanita to get intoxicated!"

"Wow! Is it true?! You're not lying just because you wanted to have some fun, do you?" Viena is curious yet a little suspicious.

"Hey! I might be many things, but I rarely lied!"

"Well, then this could be one of those rare moments," Lisabelle remarked.

"No way! Why would I lie to you?"

Thus, Laura proceeds to teach the two some little things about medicine. She showed the three types of powders she used to make the birds go wild and expin the effect of each through real practice. She insisted that this is not an abuse to animal, but rather, a whole new field of research that she is advocating to be studied on many universities throughout Seraina continent.

"Can you imagine when you are stranded in a hinternd, and you are too weak and have nothing to hunt except with small knife. What would you do? Are you going to chase a wild rabbit that runs twice your speed? Will you wrestle a bison who can crush you like butter? Or are you going to throw some pebbles to the sky hoping that one day it will bring down a rain of roasted pheasant legs from above?"

"Hahahah!" Viena ughs while imagining food raining from the sky.

"Exactly, kiddo. It's so funny since it doesn't even make sense! But what about if you have a knowledge of how to make a food that could paralyze the animals with just a few cuts of mushroom and some resin?"

"Hm . . . so you are studying poison," Lisabelle rubs her chin.

"P-Poison?! No! I am merely conducting Research on Special Ingredients Property! RSIP! Besides, poison sounds evil and criminal, and it will be hard to find funding if you put it up on the title!"

"Err sure . . . tomato tomato I guess," Lisabelle rolled her eyes.

"Wasn't it potato potato though?" Viena tilts her head.

  "Ahem!"

Suddenly, Laura stands up and brings the two somewhere else. They arrived at a far side of the ke that people rarely walk to, except for children whose stamina seem endless. It's the only spot where there are py structures intended for children. Viena had known of this pce since she can see it from afar from time to time, but never actually tried it because Randia insisted for her not to get too far from the main building.

Now, that Viena had the chance to try everything she previously unable to, she tried everything. For the first half an hour, Lisabelle pyed with Viena, but then it gets overwhelming very soon, especially with the other kids also climbing on her. Hence, she decided to take a break on a swing where Laura is drinking alone.

"Damn kids, they are too excited for something like this."

"Heh. You compin all the time, but you never actually say no to any of them. Got a big soft spot in you?"

  "Oh, shut up."

"Hey, come to think of it, you look pretty taller than the st time we met."

"I think so. I don't really care about that anyway. Height is a gift no matter what."

Laura starts swinging as she kicked the ground back-to-back. The booze canteen doesn't leave her lips as she enjoys the breeze on her face. Lisabelle followed after her, relishing the joy of the gentle wind.

"I wish the kids are going to grow as tall as you, because one of them might not be able to."

"Are you talking about Viena? Hah, that's not a problem. She can be as small as possible if you asked me."

"I'm not talking about her height, Lisabelle."

"Huh? Then what are you talking about?"

". . . Do you remember what I asked her the first time we meet?"

Lisabelle looks to the afar. Even though it's supposed to be highest point of noon, the clouds are so thick that the sun barely shone. She tries to remember the event from months ago, and when she remembered, she immediately gets off the swing. She remembered that Laura once asked whether Viena is sick.

  ". . . Is my sister sick?"

"Hm, I don't know much to be honest."

Irritated by Laura's seemingly half-hearted answer, Lisabelle forcefully stopped her swing until she almost fell.

"Uagh! Why did you do that?" Laura compined.

  "Is my sister sick, Laura?"

"Do you know what Yarna is, Lisabelle?"
