1- Unlucky

  Secrets...

Secrets are a funny thing. A friend telling you an embarrassing memory can be the ultimate sign of trust, while a stranger telling you about the time they butchered some poor sod in an alleyway may be seen as a threat. Unfortunately, it was the tter for the man running down the alleyways of the heavily polluted Neo Tokyo.

His guildmates (and friends) in YGGDRASIL knew this man as Bellriver. Bellriver had always been a corporate wage sve for the Ohito corporation, not that he had a choice. The world of 2138 was vastly different from the world a century before, and not in a good way. In the advent of the Third World War, corporations, seeing the possibility of making a ridiculous amount of money, flew at the opportunity to rebuild the wartorn cities of the old world. Over the decades since 2050, corporations have managed to gain more and more power until they stood at the top of the proverbial pyramid. It could be said that the secrets of these mega-corporations were to die for.

One day, when Bellriver had finished his mandatory overtime shift, he forgot his Haz-Mask and walked back to his cubicle near an exec office. Before he retrieved the mask, he heard a commotion behind the door. Instead of walking away, he made the mistake of not walking away.

POV: 3rd Person - BellriverHis boots spshed along the yellowish-green puddles of the dark alleyways of Neo Tokyo, his Haz-Mask attempting to filter out the city's toxic air. He stopped after turning a corner to catch a breath, only to start choking. The warning system in his mask was going off like an air-raid arm. Fiddling with the settings, he finally managed to shut them off, feeling a sense of reprieve. Suddenly, pain fred around his stomach, reminding Bellriver that he, indeed, had been shot.

"Shit!" he excimed, clutching his side. The hitman that was sent after he managed to shoot him in the side before he escaped his apartment, luckily it went through him.

A few days ago, he caught wind of a corpo "secret", completely unintentionally, by the way, and now he is being hunted by some psycho!

'What did I do to deserve this?' Bellriver thought. He cursed his luck, but then again, bad luck got him that job and everything else in his life. So why was he even surprised? He thought that keeping quiet and being a good sve would keep him safe, but it just brought trouble to him. Lady Luck truly is cruel...

Bellriver's heart stopped when he heard whistling, of all things, at the entrance of the alley he was hiding in. He tried to run, only to trip and stumble to the ground.

The pathogens in the air had begun to enter his body and were now shutting down most of his motor functions.

The whistling stopped for a few moments only to resume with renewed excitement. Footsteps, one after another, echoed through the alley, getting closer by the second until, finally, they stopped. Bellriver groaned as he flipped onto his back and saw the previously mentioned psycho staring right at him. Accepting his fate, the downtrodden man didn't attempt to run or crawl away.

"Well, that was fun, little mice, but now it's time to die," the assassin stayed silent for an awkward amount of time, almost as if he was waiting for a reaction. "Aren't you gonna beg?"

"Just get it over with," Bellriver wearily replied. He had heard of what the city's toxic air and the numerous airborne bacteria did to the body, but he never thought he would have to experience it. On the pain rating scale, he would give it a 15 out of 10. His wound felt like someone had doused it with hand sanitizer and then lit said hand sanitizer on fire.

"Wait, really?" the assassin seemed almost befuddled by Bellrivers reaction.

"Yeah, please just kill me now. I'm tired of everything! I'm tired of my shitty life, I'm tired of my shitty job, and I'm tired of my shitty job! So, please - get it over with!"

The assassin burst out in ughter and ughed for a minute or two until he calmed down. "Man, I haven't seen a guy who wished for death as much as you. But I'm very thankful for you making things easy for me; you see, my knees have been killing me for the past year, getting old, ya know, and I've got this back thing." the man replied whilst chuckling, "But anyways, ya know I got a job to do." His previous light-hearted tone now repced by the cold, calcuting one of a seasoned killer. "I'll make it quick for giving me such a ugh, I haven't had one in a while."

By now, Bellriver was going in and out of consciousness. He could barely distinguish the form of the assassin lifting a pistol toward him, but he could clearly see the YGGDRASIL logo in the top left corner of his sight.

The st thing that went through his head was confusion about why he could see his favorite game floating in his vision, almost as if he had a VR headset on.

Then everything went dark a second ter.
