Can a Smile Be Trusted?

  The hospital was lively.

The sounds of patients and doctors were humming.

But Ken and Sophia felt as if the sounds were gone.

All they could see and hear was the black-haired woman standing in front of them, holding a purse in her hands.

“Why are you here?” Ken asked.

Emilie glanced towards his arms as she saw blood on the gauze.

  She replied, her breath steady,

“I am just here to check up on Jack. He didn’t come to school today, so I was wondering what might have happened. But… when I got to your house, Mrs Sophia was already leaving in her car, so I just followed her.”

Sophia’s brow furrowed as she thought, “Why… does she sound angry and calm at the same time? I didn’t even notice her following me.”

  Ken crossed his arms.

“All that just for one day off?”

Emilie tilted her head and smiled gently.

“I don’t see any issues with that. Jack is an amazing kid, and he barely misses school, so I had to wonder, as he did leave school early yesterday too-”

  Sophia interrupted.

“So your solution… was to follow someone to a hospital?”

  Emilie chuckled.

“I understand what you are concerned about, Mrs. Sophia, but I am only doing what a responsible teacher would…”

Ken looked at her as if examining her.

  “Why…does she feel too sweet?”

  Ken sighed.

“If you really want to know…”

Ken explained the situation to Emilie.

Emilie gasped as she heard Ken.

“I… am so sorry, no wonder you guys were concerned… I shouldn’t have come.”

She smiled. “But… I still would like to remain here, just to see if he is okay.”

Sophia looked at the ICU room gate as she thought,

  “What is more important… Jack or my insights… I don’t know…”

She sighed as she gazed towards Emilie.

  “At least you understand.”

The mutter in the hospital erupted again, and the atmosphere slowly calmed down.

  A few minutes passed.

  A doctor arrived towards them.

“Guys… he is better now. He is still unconscious, but he will be fine.”

Sophia’s eyes widened as she jumped.

  “THANK YOU, DOCTOR!”

She jumped at Emilie, hugging her.

Emilie smiled. “I am so happy for you, Mrs. Sophia.”

  Emilie looked at Ken.

Ken clenched his right fist, his eyes blazing as he screamed inside,

  “YESSSS!”

He tried to stand up, but his arm ached.

  “Ahh…”

A nurse grabbed him and helped him sit down.

“You need to rest for now.”

  Sophia gazed towards Ken.

  “Yes, Ken, don’t worry now…”

She bent down, looking into his eyes as she caressed his cheek.

  “You did what you could…”

Ken smiled. “Now go, meet him.”

  Sophia nodded, smiling gently.

She got up and rushed towards the ICU room.

  Emilie looked at her running.

  “Is that so…”

Emilie looked at Ken and smiled gently.

“I am so happy for you, Mr. Ken.”

She walked towards the ICU room.

Ken looked at Emilie as his brow furrowed.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

“Her smile… it feels too perfect. It’s making me uneasy…”

Inside the ICU, Sophia sat near Jack. He lay unconscious but breathing.

As Sophia ran her fingers through his hair,

“You will be fine, Jack… Mom is here. She will always be here.”

Emilie watched Sophia from near the door, her gaze on the electrocardiogram, showing Jack’s heart beating steadily.

Emilie walked away towards the exit, her gaze furious.

  Ken watched her.

  “What was her deal?”

She headed outside the hospital, the birds chirping, the wind breezing.

As she got to the parking lot, she pulled out her phone from her purse and called someone.

  Emilie: “Yeah, he is fine.”

A girl replied from the other side.

  Girl: “What happened though?”

  Emilie: “Sinisters.”

Girl: “Oh… and he’s okay, right? Because I swear if he has a single scratch—”

Emilie: “He doesn’t, but your father was bleeding.”

  Girl: “Thank you.”

Emilie: “You should be. You know how hard it was to make up a story?”

The girl chuckled: “Says the woman who is faking her existence… but I guess I’ll give you some credit.”

Emilie ended the call as she got inside her car.

  “Bitch.”

  Meanwhile…

In the cheerful city of Mumbai, India,

A girl with brown hair and black eyes wore a brown leather jacket.

She looked at her phone, smiling.

  She thought to herself,

“Why my brother all of a sudden… they promised me that they won’t harm him.”

  The phone screen showed “Emilie.”

  Meanwhile, at the hospital…

  At 6:30 pm,

  The sun was setting.

Sophia ran around in panic, anxious.

“Wake up… wake up…” she muttered.

Ken sat on a chair as his mind wandered.

“Emilie… why are so many strange things happening since yesterday… I had also felt someone near our house.”

Ken leaned back. “I am so exhausted.”

  He looked at his arm.

“At least my arm doesn’t hurt anymore…”

After a while, a doctor came up towards them.

  “He is awake now.”

  Sophia ran inside the ICU.

She saw Jack sitting on the bed, his face horrified.

  He looked at Sophia. “Mom…”

Tears fell from her eyes as she hugged Jack.

“I am glad you are okay.”

  Jack cried.

“Mom… I was scared… it was so scary. It felt as if I wasn’t in control.”

Ken rushed in as Jack looked at his arm, his eyes puffed.

“Sorry, Dad… I didn’t hurt you. I am really sorry, It wasn't me-”

  Ken smiled warmly.

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.”

  Sophia pulled back.

“What matters right now is that you are okay.”

Her eyes shone through the tears.

  Jack stood up.

Ken kneeled down, looking Jack in the eyes.

“Don’t be afraid, okay? I am here.”

Jack nodded as he gazed towards the ground.

Jack walked outside limping as Ken asked,

  “Want me to carry you?”

Jack shook his head. “No… I can walk.”

The doctors looked at the family and smiled.

Jack slowly walked outside, grabbing his parents’ hands.

The wind blew strong, cold, and soothing.

The sun was on the verge of setting.

As Ken looked at the sky, an aurora stretched across the sky, splitting it in half.

  Jack smiled.

  “It’s… beautiful.”

  Sophia nodded.

“I am pretty sure… the sky was like this when you were born.”

Ken reached his car, and Sophia reached hers.

As they went back towards home,

Ken sat in the driver’s seat as Jack sat behind.

“Jack… you don’t need to fear anything. Everything will be okay.”

  Jack nodded. “Okay…”

Ken thought, “But will it really be okay?”

The sun set, and the sky went dark as Jack looked outside the window.

A shiver ran down his spine.

His eyes widened in horror. “Scary…”

Ken tightened his grip on the steering wheel as he started the car, heading towards their house.

The danger was starting, the cracks were spreading.

  But far away, across oceans,

  A different story was unfolding.

  In India,

In the cheerful city of Mumbai,

  At 9 pm,

  The night was cold.

A girl walked into a bazaar.

  She wore a leather jacket.

She had black eyes and hair with a shade of brown.

She looked at the sky as she thought,

  “Sinisters exist.

Many believe them to be a fairy tale story,

But I, who have gained powers from them,

  Know that they exist.

They have existed since the creation of the universe,

  But I don’t care.

  I will destroy them.

I will tear them apart for hurting my little brother.”

She carried a bag of groceries in her hand,

Filled with carrots, potatoes, and a packet of meat.

  Her trail of thought continued,

  “Lily…

That was the first word I heard in this world.

  What does it mean?”

A group of children walked towards her.

  “????, ??? ?? ???? ???” (Sister, Can we have something?)

  “????? ??? ????? ?? ??? ???? ???? ???” (I haven't eaten for days.)

The girl stopped as she gazed into their eyes.

  She saw them smiling.

  Her face scrunched up.

  “Disgusting…”

  She walked through them.

“I wasn’t a planned one. They had me when they were 18.

  Mopping the floor,

Cleaning the toilet at the age of 3 was normal for me.

  Doing chores without eating.

Whenever I didn’t do good enough,

I was slapped. I constantly heard a few words, ‘You don’t deserve the food.’

And these kids have the guts to beg and not work?”

Suddenly a boy passed her, his eyes flashing.

He screamed at his phone. “I hate you, Dad!”

  She chuckled.

“The thing that I hate the most isn’t even them… it’s me.”

  She walked towards a vendor.

An old woman sat behind it.

  The vendor asked her,

  “??? ???? ????? ??? ????” (What do you want? Daughter.)

“??? ????.” (Nothing) She walked away.

“When I was 5 years old,

I was used to going to school hungry.

  Making food was hard…

I was picked by a bitch, Rocky… even remembering her makes me angry. She punched me… in front of everyone. I looked at the teacher, but

Even the pussy teacher’s face was like I was a pitiful animal.”

She looked at a boy in a young couple’s arms.

  The girl smiled and thought,

  “I turned 8,

  Jack was born.

He was an adorable and loved child.

But I didn’t hate him… he was so adorable.

His little giggles, his eyes shining looking at me… it melted my heart.

I treated him like the gem he was.

I never wanted him to get hurt.

So I took the blame for his mistakes and saved him from the sufferings I endured in my entire life…

  But then,

When I was 11, I was forced by Becky, another fat bitch, to come on a school trip, or they would harm Jack.

I got scared and begged my mom to let me go without explaining anything.

She did let me go, and I was constantly thrown around the entire trip.

I was thrown out of a ride, and my head started bleeding, so I was left to rest on the school bus outside the trip venue.

  Those assholes of ‘teachers’…

Just left me on the bus.

After a while, a drunk driver crashed into the school bus, and I was supposed to be dead.

But just before the crash, I was given an opportunity, to make a contract with the Sinisters,

To gain their powers, and the only catch was… obeying them. Well, fuck that now, but then

  I didn’t know who I was hearing.

  Who were they?

But I wanted to escape this life.

I only asked them one thing… the most precious thing I wanted.

  “Will… Jack be safe?”

They said yes and agreed to my demands… then ‘he’ appeared suddenly and took me away.

After that, I was supposed to be dead by everyone.

Now I am a 16-year-old girl making a living in India, far away from dad and mom.”

The girl walked forward, looking at a couple.

Her eyes gazed towards them, but her mind continued,

“They have broken the deal. They have hurt Jack. That is not something I can sit by and tolerate, fucking bastards.”

The couple looked at the girl. The boy walked towards her.

  “???? ??? ??, ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ???...???? ?????? ???? ?? ?????, ???? ????? ?????????”

(Go to hell, Is there a show going on?...I will make your life hell, You will regret looking at me.)

  The girl laughed. “HAHA.”

She walked a step forward as she looked him in the eyes. “You will make my life hell?”

  She tilted her head,

  As the boy vanishes.

  She thinks to herself.

“You can’t ever make me suffer the amount I have already”

She looks up in the sky.

The boy’s body hanging above a telephone wire.

  His limbs detached in pieces.

From his face to his legs, he hung up on the electric wires.

A drop of blood fell on the ground.

“Think about what you say to me…but I guess you don’t have that chance anymore.”

  Suddenly…

  The boy’s body lit up.

His body burned with agonizing heat, and the sound of hissing erupted throughout the crowd.

The surrounding people screamed looking at the body.

  “AHHHHH.”

  “???????!!”(Motherfucker.)

The crowd rushed away from the scene as the girlfriend of the boy watched.

  Her face was horrified.

  She ran towards the girl.

  “??? ???? ??? ?????|"(I will kill you.)

  Her face laced with anger.

Suddenly a man with red hair fell from the sky.

Onto the girl smashing her in the ground.

  “Gravity is useful…”

  The girl looked behind.

  “Why are you here?”

The man gazes towards the girl as he sits on the girlfriend’s body.

“Your father survived my fire, now I have nothing else to do.”

The girl gazed sharply. “I will kill you, if you say that again…if my father dies, then who will take care of Jack?”

  The red-haired man chuckled.

“I won’t, ‘He’ apologised to you about it too tho?”

The girl sighed “Apology?, well I won’t call it that…but I guess I forgive him regardless.”

The red-haired man jumped upwards, slowly rising above the ground.

“So see ya, Elsa, gonna see who is next on the victim list.”

Elsa looked at him, flying away as she muttered, “Yvette Ember…fucking annoying.”

  After a while…

  Elsa reached her home.

She pulled out her phone calling someone.

Emilie sat on her couch, watching TV and drinking juice as she answered: “What now?”

Elsa: “Book my ticket to Sweden”

Emilie while drinking chokes, she raised an eyebrow: “What the fuck? You are told not to come here, right?”

Elsa: “Oh, I am sure he wouldn’t mind.”

Emilie wiped her mouth: “Well that is true…but why are you coming exactly...?”

Elsa: “To check up on Jack, I can’t sit around like this…but don’t tell ‘him’ this reason, just say that i am going to kill Dad or something”

Emilie: “Yeah, that is not ‘my’ problem; at which date then?”

Elsa: “How about...a week later? I will pack up everything till then”

  Emilie: “Okay…Elsa Kristopher right?”

Elsa’s breath hitched as she nodded: “Yes”

  Emilie: “Okay”

  Emilie ends the call

Elsa stands in the living room looking at the night sky outside as she thinks to herself

  “What…is my name?”
