CHAPTER 04: THE HIDDEN FILE

The death of the officer shook the entire station. Everyone stood in silence. There were no signs of struggle, no wounds—only fear left in the air. Something cold… something unseen was among them.

Steven ordered everyone out of the room.

â€œSeal the body. Get the forensic team. And someone take Piya to the quiet room. She shouldn’t see this.”

But as two constables tried to gently lead Piya away, she stopped and whispered:

â€œHe was one of them… he closed his eyes while I cried…”

Her words made one constable freeze in pce.

Steven’s hands were trembling as he picked up his phone to call headquarters, but the line was dead. Every single device inside the station stopped working. Phones, radios, computers—all silent.

One of the newer officers, Jonah, walked over to Steven.

â€œSir… there’s something you should see in the basement archive.”

Steven followed him downstairs, heart heavy with dread.

The old archive room was dusty, filled with boxes and cabinets that hadn’t been opened in years. But one locker stood open… even though it had been locked with a chain st year.

  Inside y a file.

  On the cover:CASE #206 – FARM INCIDENT – 18 Years AgoStatus: COVERED / CLOSED / SEALED

  Steven opened it.

  There it was.

Photos of the small vilge farm, the little girl’s broken body, and the name of the farmer who had filed the compint—Naresh.

  And there were signatures.

Officer Muttins stopped breathing for a moment when he saw them.

Three top officers from Nightvill’s station. All now in powerful ranks. All had signed the closing order… all had taken bribes.

One of the officers had written in the margin:

"Priest holds power. Case must die. Money received. Burn this."

  But the file wasn’t burned.

  Jonah looked at Steven.

â€œSir… this was hidden under your name. The lock register shows you were the st to open this file... seven years ago.”

  Steven backed away.

  â€œNo. That can’t be. I never…”

  He remembered.

A te night, years ago… a request from a senior officer to sign a transfer sheet… a sealed envelope… he hadn’t checked it properly. That signature—it was his.

Outside the archive room, Piya sat alone, drawing with a broken crayon on the floor. A stick figure of a girl. A house. A man with a hat.

And then—many men. With red crosses on their faces.

  Jonah knelt beside her.

  â€œWho are they, little one?”

She looked up at him and smiled softly. “The bad ones. They didn’t help me. Papa is making them sleep.”

A scream echoed from the upper floor.

  Another officer down.

  Steven rushed up the stairs.

Blood on the walls. Same words again:

  â€œYOU LET ME DIE.”

  Jonah looked at Piya.

  â€œWhere is your papa, dear?”

She looked at him. Her innocent eyes shining.

  â€œPapa is close… very close…”
