The death of the officer shook the entire station. Everyone stood in silence. There were no signs of struggle, no woundsâonly fear left in the air. Something cold⌠something unseen was among them.
Steven ordered everyone out of the room.
âSeal the body. Get the forensic team. And someone take Piya to the quiet room. She shouldnât see this.â
But as two constables tried to gently lead Piya away, she stopped and whispered:
âHe was one of them⌠he closed his eyes while I criedâŚâ
Her words made one constable freeze in pce.
Stevenâs hands were trembling as he picked up his phone to call headquarters, but the line was dead. Every single device inside the station stopped working. Phones, radios, computersâall silent.
One of the newer officers, Jonah, walked over to Steven.
âSir⌠thereâs something you should see in the basement archive.â
Steven followed him downstairs, heart heavy with dread.
The old archive room was dusty, filled with boxes and cabinets that hadnât been opened in years. But one locker stood open⌠even though it had been locked with a chain st year.
Inside y a file.
On the cover:CASE #206 â FARM INCIDENT â 18 Years AgoStatus: COVERED / CLOSED / SEALED
Steven opened it.
There it was.
Photos of the small vilge farm, the little girlâs broken body, and the name of the farmer who had filed the compintâNaresh.
And there were signatures.
Officer Muttins stopped breathing for a moment when he saw them.
Three top officers from Nightvillâs station. All now in powerful ranks. All had signed the closing order⌠all had taken bribes.
One of the officers had written in the margin:
"Priest holds power. Case must die. Money received. Burn this."
But the file wasnât burned.
Jonah looked at Steven.
âSir⌠this was hidden under your name. The lock register shows you were the st to open this file... seven years ago.â
Steven backed away.
âNo. That canât be. I neverâŚâ
He remembered.
A te night, years ago⌠a request from a senior officer to sign a transfer sheet⌠a sealed envelope⌠he hadnât checked it properly. That signatureâit was his.
Outside the archive room, Piya sat alone, drawing with a broken crayon on the floor. A stick figure of a girl. A house. A man with a hat.
And thenâmany men. With red crosses on their faces.
Jonah knelt beside her.
âWho are they, little one?â
She looked up at him and smiled softly. âThe bad ones. They didnât help me. Papa is making them sleep.â
A scream echoed from the upper floor.
Another officer down.
Steven rushed up the stairs.
Blood on the walls. Same words again:
âYOU LET ME DIE.â
Jonah looked at Piya.
âWhere is your papa, dear?â
She looked at him. Her innocent eyes shining.
âPapa is close⌠very closeâŚâ
