Chapter 8: True Elemental. Re-edited.

For several days, the beast prowled the outskirts of our village, lurking in the shadows where it could not be seen. The rest of the village went about their lives, blissfully unaware of the monster stalking us. I, however, was far from ignorant. I had used [Soul Analyze] on it and knew exactly what we were up against.

The beast’s traits were deceptively simple. [Razor Claws] enhanced the sharpness of its claws, while [Cat’s Reflexes] and [Feline Swiftness] gave it superior reaction times and speed. Its abilities didn’t seem extraordinary at first glance, but combined with its stats and level, it was a force to be reckoned with.

I took some solace in knowing its level was significantly lower than my father’s. Still, I remained vigilant, knowing the jaguar’s patience wouldn’t last.

When I had used [Soul Analyze], it startled the beast, causing it to hesitate. But hesitation wasn’t fear. After a few days, it regained its boldness, creeping ever closer.

The morning it struck was like any other. My mother carried me in her arms as she walked through the village, a daily routine she had developed to soothe me. She spoke softly in Elven, her words like a melody, though my focus was elsewhere.

Through the trees, I saw it. Orange eyes glowed ominously in the shadows. The jaguar no longer hesitated. It surged into the village with terrifying speed.

The first victim was a spear-wielding elf guarding the village perimeter. Distracted and unprepared, he stood no chance. The jaguar’s claws cut through him effortlessly, spraying blood across the forest floor.

The beast darted to its next target, an elf collecting bark for medicinal herbs. He managed to stab the jaguar with a dagger, but the blade barely pierced its hide. The wound was superficial, and the jaguar’s fangs sank into him, ending his life in an instant.

I watched in horror as the monster turned its glowing eyes toward my mother and me.

Before it could strike, my father appeared, his twin short swords gleaming in the sunlight. He stepped between us and the jaguar, his stance poised and ready.

The battle that followed was a blur. My father and the beast moved so fast I could barely track their movements. His swords struck true, carving shallow wounds into the jaguar’s hide, but they were little more than scratches. The beast’s claws lashed out, but my father’s speed kept him just out of reach.

It was a stalemate, a deadly dance of precision and power. But the jaguar was clever. It maneuvered until my father circled behind it, creating an opening. Then, in a calculated move, it lunged toward my mother and me.

My father reacted instantly, closing the gap to intercept. But this was the jaguar’s trap. It struck with its paw—not its claws, but a technique. The blow generated a shocking amount of force, sending my father flying. He landed hard, rolling to a stop, momentarily stunned.

The beast turned its attention back to us.

It moved with predatory precision, closing the distance in a heartbeat. My mother turned to shield me with her body, her arms wrapping around me protectively. I watched, helpless, as the jaguar’s claws descended toward her fair skin.

  Time seemed to slow.

Panic consumed me, my mind racing as I searched desperately for a solution. I could not lose her. I would not lose her.

In my desperation, I tapped into something deep within myself. My soul’s rings spun faster, compressing and twisting mana into the air around me. I didn’t think—I willed the air to obey, binding it to my mana and forcing it into shape.

A massive hand of wind formed and slammed the jaguar into the ground with incredible force. At the same time, an instinctive [Soul Speak] erupted from me, a single word filled with undeniable command:

  “No.”

The power resonated through the village, startling everyone—including the jaguar.

Pinned under the wind’s crushing grip, the jaguar thrashed helplessly. My father didn’t waste the opportunity. He was there in an instant, driving his swords through the beast’s glowing eyes and into its brain.

The jaguar’s body convulsed before going limp. The fight was over.

I barely registered my father’s whispered thanks to the elementals as he gazed at the fallen beast. My vision blurred as exhaustion overwhelmed me. The last thing I saw before passing out was a series of prompts flashing before my eyes.
