Prologue

"And why is it a girl!"

A young man points at the entity dispyed within the picture.

A dull, gloomy, and ft-chested girl.

Her hair flow freely above the shoulders. Every sway emit a colorless and haunting aura.

"Now now, settle down for a moment", a calm and pleasant voice silence his compins, "I understand your confusion but this is just how things are"

Infront of him, the woman holding the picture points at it and spoke, "Although it doesn't feel like it, this is your Psyche. Weren't you interested in gaining a Spirit?"

It is said that words are effective methods to break into a person and it seems true. A live demonstration of his words breaking his mind's ability to process information.

"Bu- but, how can that be?!", his panic and confusion embedded within his words, "I'm not gloomy! I'm not Creepy! What's this?? Isn't the Spirit supposed to match the person??"

As he grew frantic, the woman looked at him and patted his head.

"As I said, calm down. Appearances aren't everything, you know?", the woman waited for him to look at her before continuing, "Spirits are based upon your Psyche, the closer it is, the easier to possess and control"

She looked at him in the eyes.

"Cases where the spirit doesn't match what is seen is rare but not impossible."

She patted his shoulder and continued, "After some time, the Spirit may change on its own as the Psyche is based on you"

The words calmed him down a little. It seems that words can also heal. He was very hopeful.

His hopeful gaze was met with a smile, closing in the distance.

"And you never know", she whispered, "It may look alone that but it can have a member"

The boy was confused. This professional dy's words did not register whatsoever.

Breaking away from the contact, the woman escorted him out wishing him a good life.

She knew he needed that wish, a hope to go-on because the chances that the Psyche changes is low. Moreover, a mismatched one is likely to cause much deviation inversely proportional in strength. It is more likely that a person is changed by it. Furthermore, a change in it can signal a extremely bad occurrence that managed to change a person drastically.

As the seer was thinking of such, the boy was thinking of a brighter future. Delusions of grandeur and change. Dreams of overcoming the peak and soaring above all. Unfortunately, no matter how he reached for the stars, he was firmly pnted upon the ground.

The school he had gone to catered to nurturing Spirits. As the frontline and combatants to the wilderness and beyond. The emergence of light creatures of unknown origin had startled the populous. Their intentions were full of mal-intent and hellbent on destruction. Though it was learned very quickly that these creatures are almost invulnerable, lesson paved by countless of lives.

It was hell on Earth. Hiding, hoping that the meager attempt to contain them would work. It was until a sudden change erupted. A hope within the darkest of nights. The indomitable will that birthed to a strengthened Psyche. A tent trait of life, the embodiment of the soul. Though this, Spirit users had sprung to fight against the entities. Entities that used to be invulnerable soon crumbled one-by-one and were driven out from human territories.

As civilization rebuilt, a shocking discovery had been made that sent chills through the entire world. A hole, glowing white and radiant, on the ocean upon the far distances that the observation could perceive. It defied logic and had been source to much worry. Entities as rge as isnds sprouting from it, forming new nds for smaller entities to inhabit.

Since then, many attempts had been made to venture in there but none succeeded. Either missing or retreated.

Though the Spirit and body are separate, a distance too much brings strain to the Psyche.

Humanity recovered and adapted. Though not everyone possess a spirit, and not all of the Spirits are combatants, they are given much honor and prestige as the Defenders of Humanity and their only Offensive.

With that much honor and prestige, a boy y ft on the sparring ground, having been a year since he received his Spirit appraisal.

He was still too weak. Losing to his one and only best friend like usual.

"Don't tell me a ground imprint will be your legacy, Legacy?", the taller boy smiled while extending a hand.

"Ha ha, very funny. After beating me, you make fun of my name?", the shorter one bantered, "Imagine spending nine months just to name your child Florence. Your name smells like flowers while you smell like shit"

Though their back-and-forth seem aggressive, no malice is being released from both. It was just their routine post-battle cooldown.

After some time, Legacy, the ground imprint, finally got up. Accepting the hand offered by Florence, he pulled himself to stand.

He wiped the dust off of his clothes before menting.

"Agghhh, why have I not improved", the aguish in his voice ced with disappointment an after product of the loss.

"Oh come on, you've improved from the st time", Florence looked at the ground behind him, "For example, the imprint is more visible this time"

The cheeky remark earned him a gnce of annoyance.

"It's so unfair. You have that cool ass fming knight to possess in battle while I have to suffer with this gloomy and dull one"

Legacy's envy can be felt in the air. His envy towards his friend's awesome Spirit.

Ever since he received his, had all been suffering. He tried to hide it for as long as possible from his family in fear of embarrassment but they within the same day, they discovered it. After all, he went to the seer to examine his Psyche, there was no chance he could hide it.

Upon seeing it, his parents confused and his sister ughed at him. The embarrassment was beyond shame. He tried his best to expin that it was probably just an error and they accepted it. His parents weren't fooled as his father is a Spirit user himself, personally knowing the seer that examined his child, but they decided to do as their child wishes. They were oddballs after all, their naming sense the stand-out products. If he said it was a mistake, they were gonna accept that and welcome him. By the way, his sister was grounded that night.

Though it was embarrassing to show others, every Spirit user was required to get a minimum education in Spirit and Psyche control. It was already the pn his parents wanted but they were worried if their son would be okay. Luckily, his best childhood friend was also going. In addition to his drive to master Psyche control as fast as possible to change his Spirit.

They were first taught to familiarize with their own Psyche before going to try and possess their Spirit. Legacy didn't want to familiarize with none of that as the dull and gloomy Psyche was foreign and creepy to him. It wasn't like him whatsoever. He had seen himself as outgoing, bold, and lively, never a creepy, timid, and spectral.

Thus, when actual possession was taught, his strength was beyond weak. One of, if not the weakest within his css. Mocking gnces were thrown onto him, but his outgoing personality negated them. Even befriending the ones who tried to mock him, after all, their personalities were still malleable by a stronger one.

It was today that Legacy and Florence had decided to have another showdown. Like usual, the terribly coordinated spirit possession of Legacy did not win against his childhood friend. Repeatedly being defeated and outcssed had made him envious of his pal. He knew this was wrong. They were brothers from a different mother and envy shouldn't exist between them, but if feeling were rational, they wouldn't be thoughts.

Florence let out a chuckle seeing his best friend's plight.

"It really is a wonder, you know, Leg?', he paused, "Despite being so lively, your Spirit fights so timidly. It was kind of cute"

  Silence.

"Du-dude, what the heck?", Leg was shocked, feeling the slight bile from his stomach rise, "D-don't call me Leg! Do I look like a limb to you?"

He decided to ignore the second half of the statement. It was true, though.

The Spirit form was kind of cute while acting timid. After all, he was not the Spirit, it was just the Psyche's creation. The only problem is when he is possessing it.

"R-r-right", it took Florence some time to respond, he was not gay and wouldn't want to pursue his friend. It just slipped out without his notice.

"So...", recovering from his blunder, he made a joking remark, "What do you want me to call you? Lega? Acy?Lcy"

"Just call me 'Legacy' or 'Dude'", thankfully, Legacy decided to bite.

"Yeah, then, Ly lets go buy some drinks, dude"

"You can't just shorted my name like that, IRON"

Their banter continued until one one of them almost chocked on his drink.
