102 - Innsnose - Cali

  Hey Diary,

It’s over! The earthquake happened, and we’re all alive!

I’m not sure how we’re alive, because I got a notification saying I lost three Charm levels due to death, but… Yeah… Well, if I died and all that happened was I lost some levels, I’m not too upset about it. It could have been worse. I could be, like, dead.

Maki said he knows we died, too. So it’s not just me.

The earthquake… was a lot. It was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard. When it started we all laid flat on the ground, but even that wasn’t safe. Things broke and exploded, and the water was splashing around so much it made a mist that came and covered the town afterwards.

And wind has been going in really weird directions. I’ve never felt wind coming straight down before. The poor birds and flying insects haven’t been sure what to do.

Oh, all the people in town survived. Maki said that’s the important thing. I agree it is very important, but…

Most of the big animals survived. A lot of the medium-sized animals survived. But as for the small animals, well, I think just under half made it.

They’ll repopulate in time. It’ll be like three years, but they’ll do it. I can’t resurrect five thousand mice, so I can’t let myself be upset about it. There’s literally nothing I can do to help. I hate it, but I have to live with it.

I told all the animals to go back to where they’d come from. I said the ground isn’t bad any more, so it’s safe to go home. Some fought it, a little. They didn’t succeed, because my charm magic level can’t be fought, but they tried.

And then, after dark, when everyone was nice and calm and getting mentally ready to rebuild their lives, a giant tsunami appeared.

I’ve heard of tsunamis, I knew what was supposed to happen, but somehow knowing and seeing it were two completely different things. We were sitting in our camp, watching the ocean, and then suddenly the ocean just… wasn’t there any more. It was just gone. All the animals were super confused, and we were confused, too.

And then the ocean came back, but, like, vertically. It blocked out the moon, and stars, and clouds, and everything. The ground rumbled again, but differently from an earthquake. Everyone started screaming and running away, except Maeve and Luke, who were specifically tasked with stopping the giant wave.

Which they did. They made the whole thing glow with magic, and it slooooowly turned horizontal again.

It took like fifteen minutes. They did a good job. Luke said he could feel other people linking into the spell, and Maeve agreed, so I guess people in other towns up and down the coast helped. That’s nice. I’m glad they had help. Even if they didn’t need it, having help is always good.

Tomorrow after lunch we’re going to take a report from here to the city of Clover, then make our way back towards Goldvale. And then we’ll stop in Fish to see how everyone’s doing.

It was Maeve’s idea. But everyone agrees it’s time to go home. We have to see what our town looks like.

I’m scared it looks like this town, in that it no longer exists. But it’ll be like a month. I’m sure they’ll be rebuilding it better than ever by the time we arrive.

I’m glad all the exciting things are over. I’m ready to get back to nice, boring traveling.

  Signing off,
