2. Pioneering

At the edge of the Field, near the entrance, stands a 169cm tall man with blue hair, neckce and gloves. He is the one responsible for the Arrow‘s which nearly kill-steamed the Rabbits. But instead of a Bow he has a Crossbow-like looking weapon in his hand. A “proper” Crossbow would shot bolts instead of arrows, which is one of the presumable changes done to it. In reality, while it is uncommon, in today’s VR Age, it’s more of a niche preference for pyers instead of w hole unusual design.

Crossbow’s, as they were in the Middle Ages, just can’t keep up anymore with what Pyers would be able to achieve in VR. It also wasn’t possible to simply buff the attributes of crossbows, as they are simple-to-use weapons, tilting the bance of either grinding hard or being skilled in fighting to reach high-levels. But if they are to weak then implementing them would be a waste of time.

Around two-and-a-half year after VR games began their rapid growth in popurity and technology, someone fiddled around with the crossbow. The Result? The Hand-Ballista, as it was originally named, which was the predecessor for various crossbow-like weapons through various VR Games. Said Hand-Ballista was loyal to its name as it was almost impossible to be pulled in real life. Three-and-a-half metres wide and less the three metres long, with a replica in real life. Because of the programmer’s perfectionism, pretty realistic data were used for density and force needed to pull the string, making that possible.

Which doesn’t mean that the one-to-one replica is actually usable. Should someone really draw the string, the limb would break and injure the pulling person horribly, maybe even killing him.

And today, after many copycats and innovation, auto-reload and hand-drawn are the most common aspects of VR Crossbows, allowing pyer to dispy their attributes and keep up partly to other pyer with proper training in archery. But Bluyard, the pyer, has currently neither aspect on his current weapon. Additionally, the string also doesn’t get very taut, making it impossible to deal with the rabbits quickly. In reality, what looked like a kill steal would have never succeed, because he utterly cks damage.

The Glove and Neckce weren’t much of a help. Bluyard can only shake his head at that. Thinking about it, maybe Warrior were destined to have an advantage at early game. Ranger’s are the fastest, but the speed advantage isn’t very pronounced now, as he wasn’t any better of then the girl in terms of speed. Mage’s need to figure out how to properly cast and priests don’t need further discussing.

No use being hasty now, let’s do it steadily. Hmm?

Bluyard was less surprised seeing the girl battle two additional rabbits. He was even a bit happy. He gambled on needing to kill five rabbits, even though beta-gamers needed three. But wats surprising is the girls limp. Yes, she began to limp. Even though she was just fine before. And from the way she moves, it looks simir to a combat assist. A Limp mechanic? Interesting.

Naturally, he didn’t neglect his current target. He is skilled enough to shoot at something and keep his eyes open for his surroundings. Something that distincts a second rate Ranger from third-rates.

  ~Lorelei’s PoV~

A shit, that was mean. Weapon Failure. Shortswords are Light Weapons. I knew that beforehand. But I was greedy. When I would have chosen a small Mace, I would have even less capacity now, not to mention a normal sword. Ergo, I tried to defend with the sword while shield bashing the other, but it just didn’t move as intended. And now there is a Limp mechanic! It wasn’t even my knee! My speed got also reduced, but I still seem to be the first. For now.

Current loot is two brains, four rough skins and three pieces meat. I have an idea for the brains and skins. The Field gets slowly filled with Pyers, but it doesn’t match the numbers of huts. Why? Because character creation is still cking. Craftsman, for example, was only unlocked by a quest chain involving various Crafter NPC’s. Simir, races other then Human must be unlocked ter.

Human, an allrounder race. Normally, I would have liked to choose a beast person, but… It’s Human who have the best defense quality under the “early” races.Beta-Pyer uncovered hints that ter on, other races can be unlocked to, but none of the known one is defense oriented. Besides Half-Dwarfs, but I don’t py Half-Dwarfs. My body would change to much and swords are inconvenient to use as dwarf. Half-Elf are physically weak, Cat- Dog- and Foxbeastman have all lowered defense and restriction on heavy armour. Last would be the Quarter-Spirits. Best Wisdom and boos to nature inclined stuff. They even get debuff when they wear to much metal.Their worst stat is dexterity, but they are overall physically weaker the humans. And the Quarter (actually less) is Tree Spirit, not Spirit like Spirit magic of elves.

Well, a bit more resistance to dark magic isn’t to bad. And here I am.

  ”I did it!”

”Congrats. You can hand over the meat the counter there. Exchange it either for money or something on the list.”

  ”Thank you!”

Without hesitation, Lorelei slipped through the gap of the gate and moves to said counter. It looks simir to a checkpoint to submit one’s paper, incorporating into the wall. Which it probably is, but currently misused as exchange station.

”Excuse me? One diluted healing potion please.”

  ”Hmm.”

With an acknowledging hum, the man took two pieces of the presented meat and gave a little vial to the girl. Then, without needing to be told, he took the st piece if meat and gave the girl some cooper coins. As soon as she turned away, she drunk the diluted potion, feeling her limo getting better. She shoots one st gnce at the list besides the counter, where number x meat = y item is, no other drop asked. Now being able to run at full speed again (which is only slightly better then a light jog), she doesn’t hesitate to search for a resident. Her target isn’t far. A small cozy house with flowers tended by an elderly woman. She wants to find the local leather worker. Logically, it should be somewhere to one’s right when entering the gate. Thats because there is the river. At least she saw it there when flying overhead.

  ”Excuse me!”

  ”Oh?”

  ”Were is the tannery?”

”Ah, that stinking hut with its absurd water consumption? Go just straight of this road. When it gets visible narrower, go a bit further and turn right when the smell gets the worst.”

  ”Thank you!”

  ”No problem darling.”

Lorelei already spotted several people behind her. Around seven, but it seem it will near twenty soon. The rest will probably be deyed because everyone will fight for the kills. Her chance. Hopefully. She runs straight, but still takes a gnce behind her. Ahh, everyone is pushing to be the first in a Katherine direction. Adventurer Guild maybe?

  …?

Can she even take on quests without registering? Levels and simir won’t be unlocked until then, but what about quests? The Quest system utilises the System, meaning, NPC A has to ask for help to find a cure for his wife, and then a system message pop up. And separate from it are tasks from the Guild. The typical “subjugate 10 Goblins” or “bring 5 Herbs” are manual, meaning no system assist. Only those are counted at the Adventurer Guild and are relevant for progressing ones rank. But System Quests have EXP rewards and potentially even more, while most Guild Tasks are money only rewards, with rare exceptions.

So theoretically, both are independent from each other. But full system access is only possible when registered! For example, there wasn’t any EXP for killing the Rabbits because i am not registered.

  haaaa…

Lets find out if it work. And it stinks! Guess I am here.

  *Knock Knock* “Excuse me!”

  ”…”

  *KNOCK*

  ”What!”

”Do you have something I can deliver to another Crafter here?”

  ”Fuck you!”

  ”Okay.”

  With that, she turned around.

  *step step step*

Steps that were silent before now echo strangely on the streets.

  ”…Wait! Wait, god dammit!”

  ”What is it?”

”Hand over the stuff and I give it to you.”

  ”I don’t take drugs.”

”Stop pying around. You should understand.”

Without further ado the man found two mushy brains in his hands, and four furs stacked on them. Then, he took a ther strap from his pocket and gave it Lorelei, rather forceful.

  ”Thank you.”

  ”Ha Ha.”

In grumpy mood, the guy walked inside the tannery again. As expected, even someone like him wouldn’t disrespect the goddess arrangement.

Yes, a rather unoriginal excuse, but it works. Otherwise it would be hard to have a proper tutorial for the Pyers. Almost NPC got a notice about us Wanderer and even roles they have to py. Their roles are limited, only pying tutorial NPC for now, and in the Beta no resident had any obligation further then some tasks. So when someone wants to make progress in the game, one has to be respectful and well-received among them.

…hmm, I think the tanner guy doesn’t like. But it’s not like I messed up particurly. He is so grumpy, and I don’t have any obligation of being friendly to him when he is disrespectful first.

Now, I need to find the smith, I think. Or a Tailor with particur style.
