Chapter 49. Troublemakers.

Their day started as usual- nice and friendly breakfast together with the rest of the group, combat and non combat specialists included. Then, just like always they departed, with Carla still sticking around with them to ensure both Kate and Mika were really fine and no undesirable trauma after effects reared their ugly heads. It was clear by this point that the two women were more than just willing to tag along. If someone asked Kenji, he would swear with a hand on his heart that the two seemed to be out on a mission consisting of two main parts.

First task seemed to coincide with their own general desire to adventure and make sure that their horrific past did not define them. On the contrary, the duo would travel and form memories not just as impactful as what they had gone through, but as they themselves stated 'We shall make new ones that will leave that part of our lives in the shadows like some forgotten footnote.' And It seemed they were hell bent on making it a reality.

The second task, and one that Kenji could both appreciate and be just a teeny tiny bit scared about was the extermination part. Their first expedition and the unfortunate fate the girl they saved had partly gone through seemed to have ignited their inner hatred for such vile acts. And with the two being creatures of mostly emotion rather than logic- women- they expressed said emotions in the only way it could be done. With lots, and lots of violence, targeted at every single solitary specimen of the monster species that called goblins as their extended family.

The scariest part in all of this though was the sheer dedication the duo could put in on the task as well as just how quickly they found their place among the combat group. Mika- the justicar- stood alongside him and tanked large groups of the monsters, ensuring their damage dealers could safely do their job and cull the lines of the ir opposition, while Kate- the avenger- did just that, using her large two hander to cleave through monsters with impunity and smile on her face. A slight side effect of her class she said, as the act of killing such evil and sinful creatures gave both clarity and a pleasant rush that coursed through her veins.

"Mika! Left flank more incoming! Leave these dregs to Kenji and intercept!" resounded Kaedes voice as she brought Kenji out of his musings, deflecting yet another attempt to bash his head in and activating his mass taunt.

"Come and play little shits!" he roared with a smile as he brutally swung his mace down, crushing the skull of some unfortunate orc and sending its brain matter flying, even catching some of it on his armour. 'Kaede is going to complain I smell of orcs again, isn't she?' he sighed in his head, only slightly calmed by the fact that Emi had recently learned a nifty little utility curse, courtesy of Jack with the idea. What the girl did was a rather cool application of a repelling curse, targeted at a person and their belongings. Once cast, it served as a very effective cleanse skill, allowing the team to stay quite clean despite all their numerous battles throughout each day they ventured outside city walls. And the second best part of Emi's creation? Kaede could focus all of her spellcasting on keeping the team in tip-top shape, for no matter how good and beefy the frontliners got, every now and then someone was grazed by a glancing blow here and there- nothing major or life threatening though.

"On it!" mere moments after Kaede's order came the reply from Mika as she turned and rushed over, covering their caster line, creating a simple, two man- or in this case a man and a woman- blockade. Both had taunt abilities that could cover the sides that were still somehow exposed, though Izumi, Fumiko and Kate were more than ready to get on an intercept dash should any of the enemy forces get past their tankers.

"Orc warleader approaching! Seven O'clock" Chiyo called out as she let loose arrow after arrow, her senses sharp and on high alert for any emerging threats, passing along the information to Kaede and Emi primarily, though if the rest of the party could utilise said knowledge, she would not gripe about it one bit. There was the pleasing development with Chiyo as well, Kenji mused, his job relatively simple for his current enemies and the skills at his disposal. The overly quiet and quite stoic girl had began to open up more, like a slow growing flower just barely beginning to spread its flower bud to reveal the magnificent colour and beauty it had hidden so far.

"Kate, Izumi! Clean up Kenji's side. Kenji, rotate to intercept the warleader!" Kaede called out again, barking orders like a seasoned taskmaster "Emi, slow and weakness curse on the warleader."

Everything she did she had calculated at least twice over, her ever growing intellect stat allowing for such complex and demanding tasks with barely any strain on her abilities as their healer, and should that ever be too much, Emi was still right next to her, ready to take over and let Kaede cool off just a bit, though knowing their team, should that ever come to pass they would immediately inform Jack about it and he would almost guaranteed pull out some miracle from his ass and solve the problem. Yet another reason why neither of them could even fathom a future where they could leave Jack and his freshly established guild- something he was doing most likely right about now if he had kept with the plan he himself had laid out at the breakfast table.

'Brace!' Kenji hummed in his thoughts, his legs having already dragged his form across the battlefield, small as it was, and right on the path of the incoming, near three meters tall mountain of muscles and rage barreling their way. Unlike what one would expect happening with understanding of modern day physics, Kenji stood ground even as the two forces collided, the orc just barely managing to turn his body so that the collision would be met with its hard and bony shoulder.

Loud, crashing sound resounded across the field of battle, accompanied by the grunt of exertion from Kenji, though even that noise, strained as it was, was overshadowed by the sound of impact itself, quickly followed by the half angry, half confused roar from the orc in question. The collision had not been nearly as gentle on the orc as it was on Kenji, with the former receiving quite the shock from charging in unmalleable and unmovable object with the force that it had. Any lesser being with the same strength and lacking vitality would have shattered half the bones in their arm and shoulder. This warleader, though not nearly in as much trouble, was still greatly disoriented for a brief moment, not utilized by the parties agile damage dealers only because they were still finishing up the cleaning on the sides where the trash mobs were still advancing.

"Cool! This will do as a proper workout!" Kemji exclaimed with joy, grinning and shook his own head side to side a bit, as though shaking away his own little after-impact slugness. It had been a while since the last time he had felt as much strain in his limbs as the contact just now. And, true to his expectations, the warleader swung his large and no doubt unwieldy axe, sending a light jolt of pain through the guardians shield arm with each impact blocked.

"Morron, why don't you just parry?" in exasperation rolled her eyes Fumiko, clearly just a wee- bit jealous of the man's ability to tank such strikes. Thankfully, Kenji was too busy enjoying his own little duel, no other monster even dared getting the two raging monsters close as they were establishing who gets to live another day.

"If you have time to complain, you have time to stab and slash faster. Get to it!" Kaede called out. "We need this wrapped up in ten at the latest!"

"Aye, aye!" resounded a chorus of voices as they began to really put their backs into the swings of their weapons, speeding up the rate at which the monster blood pooled at their feet.

What followed was even more of a one sided slaughter, the green skinned monsters falling down lifeless in droves all while Kenji kept the warleader occupied, delivering howl inducing cries of pain from the monster whenever its gaze moved towards one of the girls, clearly looking for a squishier and manageable target. It was so pointless and unproductive for the savage orc that even with its savage nature nad primal instincts going overdrive, it could not help but look for a way out and onto something much softer, in more ways than one. Unfortunately, and despite itself still in the dark, it was only a matter of time before it too would join its brethren on the cold, damp floor as yet another corpse. And that too would not last long- The combat squad- a name that they were temporarily using- were anything but frugal, using the ring of deconstruction without worry and leaving nice and clean battlefields behind them.

"Good Job! And well within the time limit." Kaede hummed in clear content as she began a quick round of healing and stamina recovery for the front liners and Chiyo all while Emi was on the cleanup duty, erasing body after body of the monsters almost straight away, though not before cutting the desired piece needed to present to the guild to receive the reward money for pest control.

"If we keep this up we might make a new record today." she added, motivating the team in her own way. The smile on her face was as sweet as it could get, though lesser men- something Kenji was definetly not- might take it as the smile of a sadistic taskmaster in front of the slave group said taskmaster was in charge of whipping into shape and had just come up with the most insidious plan to make their lives even more miserable than they already were.

"He he he. Ain't that the same as yesterday?" lightly chuckled Izumi, humor clear in her voice.

"Yes, as it was the day before and one before even that." Kaede still deemed it a necessity to respond as she added a rather well thought out answer. "But I don't see a problem with that. The monsters in this depth clearly do not provide us with enough challenge anymore, and what little stamina we spend I can easily recover, ensuring that no matter what we encounter, we do so in tip-top shape, thus making it a clear decision to push further in."

"That, or we need to change our place of residence to a more dangerous location. There is only so much we can achieve this deep in the civilized races controlled territories." Fumiko added.

"And we will do that soon as well, of that i am certain. I believe Jack said we have to first temper ourselves here before we head out, lest we bite off more than we can chew. And then we have to get ourselves also used to camping outside the safety of city walls, as well as all the necessary steps that come with it, like security and watch during the resting time."

"I think a tamer would be a godsend for that." Kenji chimed in, a collective sigh escaping the group as they could only dream of such a rare class to just pop out of nowhere and solve that particular can of worms. Who would be jumping with joy at the cold truth that their night's sleep would have to be partitioned due to the obvious need to have someone up at all times to make sure they don't get munched on during their sleep, be it by a pack on night hunters in the form of monsters or a roaming group of bandits or anything else that might desire to do them harm.

"Think Jack could come up with something in that regard?" Chiyo asked, her back towards the group as her gaze, sharp like that of a hawk, kept moving around the perimeter.

"Oh, he for sure could. The question is if he would do so any time soon?" hummed Carla with a smile of her own. She was not all that excited about all the blood and gore that the task of delving into monster infested territories entailed, yet she could not help but feel a smile tugging at the corner of her lips as she saw both Kate and Mika growing into their own with each encounter they faced- the scars of their damaged past becoming less and less raw. Of course she knew that said events had left deep gashes in their beings, morphing and shaping them into someone entirely different than what they were before all of this, but then again, so was this whole summoning business doing with literally everyone involved. She herself, for one, could have never imagined just how much violence and blood she could actually stomach with such relative ease, even if not entirely enjoyable.

"Shall we ask him when we get back then?" Fumiko chimed in, more than willing to take the proverbial bullet for being the messenger with bad news.

"Be my guest." Emi hummed seemingly offhandedly, but something in Fumiko's mind screamed of foul play here, so she narrowed her eyes and suspiciously glanced around, observing her friends.

"I smell a trap." she half growled, her gaze moving from one kid to another, trying its damndest to pin them down and get them squirming and spit out whatever she was missing. "Spit it out!" she furrowed her brows and half whined, doing her best to act cute since the bratty route was not working. That in turned caused everyone to laugh at the speed she was switching her tactics.

"Sorry. Sorry. Couldn't help it. I believe we were all present when Jack mentioned it. He said something along the lines of needing that experience in case we find ourselves in such a scenario again and without any convenience items we have acquired. Did it go in through one of your ears and right out the other?" Kaede explained after she had managed to calm down a bit.

"Riiight." Fumiko dragged, her mind working overtime as a similar memory vaguely came up in her mind. "There was something like that, yes." Then she paled a bit at the realization of the implication, as well as the light betrayal she realized had almost happen. "He would have chewed me out, twice!" she accused her party, going on "Once for the fact I disregarded his obviously well thought out plan of action, and second time for me forgetting all about it. And you were going to let that happen!" she pointed her finger at each one of them accusatory. "Betrayal!" she hissed.

"Only with your own best interests in mind. Who knows, Jack might just decide to spank you as punishment." Izumi joked, winking at the duelist, the meaning clear to all the girls present after one of their girls only talks in during their bathing time. In response, Fumiko only hissed again, her eyes darting cautiously to the luckily ignorant Kenji sitting nearby.

"I am done!" Emi called out, her clean up task finished.

"Perfect, let's head out then!" Kaede clapped her hands together and urged the group to move on.

Their way forward continued on as usual, with Chiyo taking point and deftly leading them forward, making a detour or two whenever she or anyone else noticed something of note- be it a herb for alchemy, a sign of a monster pack nearby or whatever else that could draw their attention, though nothing was truly noteworthy.

"Hey, what is that herb over there?" sometime shortly past noon called out Kate as the group walked past a small crop of stone spikes. The plant in question was a rather weird looking one, reminding an odd bush that sported stalks of tulips, roses and even snowdrops. A light, almost imperceptible glow surrounded the thing, giving it even more mysterious air.

"I don't recognize that one. Let's have a closer look. Might be valuable." hummed Emi, their resident encyclopedia.

Upon her urging, the group slowly, but surely, approached the location, with Chiyo straining her senses to their limit to ensure no surprises or ambushes awaited. It was not rare at all for much more valuable herbs and plants to be defended by quite powerful individual monsters, though no one among the group believed the plant to be of so high quality. Not where they were at the very least.

They were correct about the plant not being of the rare variety Emi spoke off, though whatever happened once they were close enough warranted the expression of surprise that the party sported when it all happened.

In a blink of an eye, the plant expunge a veritable mountain of light as the party was enveloped, blinding them for a moment and causing a momentary bout of dizziness, though not one of them was all too focused on that particular surprise. No, all of their attention was locked on the system message that had appeared before them.
