Even before the tide could be actually seen from the town walls, Jack both heard and felt it. His cloaked, blurry mercenary persona stood on the walls and heard howls and shrieks of all manner of creatures in the distance, paid little to no attention by the guards and soldiers. The aura he exuded screamed a skilled fighter and those would be dearly needed in the near future. Who were the guards then to prevent volunteers from assisting them in their job.
Jack had given the kids choices when they woke up, suggesting they did not move to the very front line, but work more as a relief force, ensuring that no particular place was too overwhelmed. While no doubt dangerous, they were one of the best equipped people around at the moment, the elite squad of the local city lord not including- and those people would be doing the same thing, just on a greater scale. And he demanded the group stay in contact with him at all times, demanding help if things got too dicey. And when he received incredulous gazes, he reminded them just how little time has gone by since the tutorial and that he could still put them through the hoops if necessary. "Not that i will be moving personally though. There is this dude that took care of the uninvited guests Ramia assigned to us, so he will be the one to act. Rest assured, my ass ain't leaving my basement any time soon." He had grinned as he spoke.
Even now his senses tracked them, a bit too worried that Kenji and Kaede with their unique status would attract unwanted complications, but there was little he could do than react and roll with the punches. A large, two hander adorned his back, its simple yet elegant design speaking of minimalistic style focus on performance, though at the same time the edge of the sword screamed of danger and deadliness. A weapon made for carnage.
The forest swayed and wailed as roars and constant thrumming could be felt all the way on the walls, until finally, the first creatures stumbled through the trees. Even from his position, Jack could see the glinting, half maddened eyes of the beasts- bloodthirsty and frenzied. They screeched and howled as their speed rose at the sight of the walls, like a thirsty man rushing forwards in the desert upon noticing an oasis with water.
Everything from wolves, the size of a german shepard all the way to ones the size of a horse, to elephant sized bears and larger still predators like tigers and lions, or whatever exotic and mystical subspecies these were. Then, further still behind them were monsters. A horde of goblins, followed by orcs- both fighters and even some shamans. As the beasts rushed forward, more and more creatures emerged, though as far as Jack could sense, there was nothing overly egregious. At worst, a few trolls slowly slumbered forward, their three to five meter tall frames slowly slugging forward.
"Archers ready!" came a thunderous roar rolling over the battlements, followed by an audible sound of countless bows being drawn, followed further still by a moment of silence, the roars and screams of monsters closing in notwithstanding. Then, just like before, the order washed over the walls "Fire at will!" and a blanket of arrows blotted out the sky, peppering the advancing monster horde. More wails and shrieks followed, as rows and rows of the monsters fell, slowly forming small walls of bodies that were then used as a cover by the goblins and orcs.
Then, a much louder shrieks came, as through the forest charged the tanks- rhinoceros like monsters, covered with armor like steel plates and head that seemed like battering rams. Their enormous bodies looked like large bulldozers- no doubt their task was to create entry points in the walls.
"Siegebreakers! mages at the ready!" came the same authoritative voice, soone nough followed by a rain of elemental magic launching over the walls, peppering the siegebreakers with fireballs, ice lances and even lightning bolts- all seemingly doing nothing to the still incoming biological tanks.
CRASH!
The first impact could be felt even dozen of meters away from the impact place, followed by even more violent rumble as the siegebreaker seemingly vibrated violently, only to glow for just a moment before it detonated in a violent explosion.
"Fuck!" a loud curse resounded from one of the other adventurers manning the walls near Jack, "They have a biomancer. Shit, shit shit!"
Moments later, another crash, followed by similar explosion resounded, and then two more, impacting the same two locations as before. A few other siegebreakers lay dead on the plains surrounding the walled town, successfully taken down before reaching their target. And yet, their mission was complete, as two breaches could now be seen in the walls- places through which the monster horde could crash through. Sure, they could have sent wave after wave of lesser beings to stack corpses to the point of walking up to the walls, but why waste so much force without actually draining the defenders in the process? With the openings in the walls however, each monster slain will have drained energy from the defenders, increasing the likeliness of the city's downfall.
The defenders did not sit idly by however. As soon as those breaches formed, a walls of shields and spears formed in front of them, guaranteeing that each and every step inside the walls would have to be fought and claimed through blood and death. And so, phalanxes awaited the next wave of monsters, riddling their bodies with holes as they charged inside the walls through those two breaches. Roars and wails overlapped one another, the last cries of the frenzied creatures being slain as they crashed in the defenders.
More wolves, goblins and other lesser creatures came first, dying like some sort of insects flying into the fire. Yet, with each passing moment, the defenders grew more and more tired, their muscles strained and grunts resounding as they braced and soldiered on, pushing and pulling their long spears, skewering the monsters. Some ten to fifteen minutes they braced the never ending tide of monsters, holding the line and not letting a single creature past, their faces solemn, but determination reflected in their eyes- their families and loved ones were behind, depending on their brave and unyielding spirit.
"Disruption!" Came the same iron command that had ordered the archers and mages beforehand, cold and unyielding like before.
Jack, or as he was now- the mercenary, jumped, his body spinning as landed on the forming monster pile in front of one of the breaches, his sword singing as it was hauled through the air, slicing through whatever it touched, splitting monsters in pieces, giving a much needed space for the phalanx behind him. A formless, bloodthirsty aura emanated from his body, causing shivers to run down the spines of not only the defenders but the incoming monsters as well, though neither side stopped. The monsters still kept coming and the phalanx swapped their lines, allowing the exhausted blood men to rest, their arms screaming with pain.
Much like the mercenary on this side, the other breach experienced a similar sight, though there were a couple of people on the other side doing the same- working together to create a momentary separation of the front lines, allowing the phalanx to switch out without too much losses and disruption in the lines.
"Spears down!" came yet another roaring order, and both the mercenary and the other group scaled the wall like some sort of reptiles, allowing the previous manner of combat to resume, the spears once again getting pushed and pulled, reaping monster lives like they had no value, stacking the corpses higher and higher.
And yet, no matter how many were speared down, more and more came through, as though a ravenous, much more terrifying creature was behind them, making death on these spears seem like the obvious and better escape. 'Just what is out there that's pushing them all to such insane lengths?' Jack asked to himself in the privacy of his mind, a few, eldritch horror like creatures coming to mind, though each and every possible culprit that surfaced in his memory was discarded as quickly as they arose- each and every one of them far too corrupting to have left no traces of their presence known. 'if not them, what else then? Could it truly be the spirit of the world, too impatient to let the fates set up by its own design play out properly? Or perhaps a local guardian spirit, driven half mad by something beyond its control?' Even without the eldritch horrors, he could still come up with a few ideas for the culprit, and so he allow his mind to wander until the call for interference once again resounded.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Just like previously, Jack landed with style and flair, his two hander singing as it cut through monster flesh like butter, reaping more and more of their lives with ease. His blood curdling killing intent the only thing capable of stifling the incoming horde just enough to allow the spear wall to switch over. His fellow interceptors seemed to be using some sort of ice field, achieving similar result, though with much greater efforts spent. It was this killing intent that had earned him the position, since he had found the man in command of this place and shown just a glimpse of it to the man who had immediately recognized a valuable asset then he saw one.
And once again, the moment the fresh spear wall was in position, Jack disengaged, allowing the previous system to take place, the spears once again moving down the small monsters squeezing in.
"Ha ha ha. Amazing! Good job soldier!" the commander barked once Jack was back on top of the wall, his sword still dripping with fresh blood.
"Mercenary. Don't get those mixed up." Jack replied, his voice low and chill inducing. 'Good thing he spoke so little.' a thought sneaked through the minds of those who heard him talking.
"Right. Right. Still, a fine job you do there." the commander still praised, turning his head and barking some more orders as they held back the tide, his gaze moving around the wall and the non stop surge of the monsters. "Got much juice in that gas tank still? At the rate it's going we might need some space to clear out that mountain of corpses, lest the incoming monsters start launching themselves over it in the back lines of the phalanx."
"How long?"
"Minutes at the very least. Larger and larger bodies are crashing in an spatial storage devices have limited space."
"What about this?" the merc asked, a simple rope appearing in his hands, just withdrawn from his storage space. With a practiced ease he swung it, hooked the leg of a goblin corpse on the smaller size and janked it up the wall dragging it further towards the top. Once there, he dropped it next to his feet and drew out another ring, handing it towards the commander. "Try to use it like you would a spatial tool. It dematerializes the bodies, so the most valuable corpses should not be touched with this thing, but it should speed up the process significantly."
The commander glanced at him skeptically, but took the ring and did as told, both of his brows raising in surprise at the speed and ease the body disappeared. "Where did you get this? I have never seen anything like it before."
"Can't say, Sale not public yet." he grunted but looked at the commander as if waiting for his decision.
"It would be faster, yes." the commander nodded, his gaze returning to the merc. "So, can we depend on you to give us that opening?"
"One breach at a time. A break in between." the merc replied "And keep counting." he added as he looked to a rather scrawny, scholar like dude next to the commander who nodded his head at the direct words. Then he looked at the commander once again "Signal when to start." With that said, he once again unsheathed his greatsword and prepared, his muscles tensing as he waited. The commander waved over a helper and gave a few short orders as well, sending said helper away with the ring now heading towards one of the phalanx lines.
"Second wave is closing in. We don't have much time!" a scout yelled as he fell on his face, breath hitching as he was trying to recover, no doubt having run with all his speed to deliver the news.
"Shit. Too soon!" the commander cursed an gazed at the merc. "Merc, go now!"
With the signal given, Jack's legs tensed as he propelled himself through the air, his spirit drawing mana from the air and channeling it through his blade. With a loud crash he landed on the other side of the wall, creating a separation between the monsters still outside and the few that were passing through the moment of his landing. His blade screamed, sang a song of blood, death and gore as it was expertly handed, slicing flesh and bone alike.
Jack had to admit, that for all the fun and quite the intriguing new playthrough he was now experiencing, there was something to be said about pure, uncontrolled and raw violence, wrapped since and snug in plenty of skill. The sound of the air, split by the sheer velocity of his blade slicing through it, the crunch of the bones he would shatter as his foot slammed on the ground for each new step forward, shattering some now dead creatures limbs underneath. Or the unique smell of frenzy, fear and blood in the air as he rampaged across the field in front of the towns walls. Beneath the hood where his face was hidden, raw and savage grin spread across his face, accompanied by light, yet disturbing laughter speaking volumes of just how much he was enjoying himself. It was only a few minutes later when he heard the gruff voice of the commander that he snapped out of his revelry, jumping back a few steps and then quickly finding the best way back to the safety within the walls. It was in this moment of calm that a rather disturbing thought flashed across his mind, discarded as a foolish notion and clearly rubbish. 'Have those months spent alone in the abyss, slaying monsters non stop until exhaustion, made me a bit mental? Nah, cannot be.'
"Holy hell merc! Just how high is your level and gear?" the commander asked as Jack slumped against the wall, taking deep and measured breaths as his body relaxed and recovered.
"Don't ask what you should not." he answered with cold voice.
"Right, right. My bad. How soon until you can clear the other side?"
"Need five to ten minutes, then can go again."
"Understood. Tell me when ready." the commander nodded and turned, barking some more orders to the defenders who were sweating bullets, their muscles straining under the constant pressure of the incoming monsters. The mercenary had done a good job, the breach once again mostly cleaned up, reducing the strain on the phalanx. it could also be heard that the other side was slowly pushed back, the risk of a breach growing higher and higher. And the worst thing? The real line breakers had yet to come.
Thankfully, Jack spent barely five minutes before calling out to captain and rushing towards the other side, once again launching himself off the walls, landing with a crash and disrupting the flow on incoming monsters. And once again, his swords danced, drinking blood of numerous monsters, creating a split between the wall and the incoming horde. Even he could feel his muscles straining and working overtime while behind him, corpses after corpses were quickly disintegrated, cleaning up the place in real time. Jack could not help but grin even more, his matter storage filling up bit by bit. 'Should I make this thing into a commodity and sell? Why should the kids work their asses off if I could have plenty other groups of adventurers do the same?'
Right as the mercenary was finishing up the other breach, even through the roar and churning of the battlefield he heard a somewhat muffled explosion or tow, followed soon after by a rather panicked voice of Kaede in his ear.
"There is now a third breach and some sort of a tunnel opened on the west side. We are at the tunnel and dealing with the creatures as they are emerging, but I don't know how long we will hold on. There are a lot of them."
"The elites should be there soon. Hold out for as long as you can but don't risk your lives." he commanded as he received the signal from the commander and retreated at the same time.
"Understood!" Kaede replied and disconnected, focusing on their own side of battlefield.
One might be wondering why would the cream of the crop would leave such unknown mercs such as him to do what he was doing, raking in quite a bit of cash in such daring and one might say downright suicidal maneuvers. The answer was much simpler than one would expect- the leadership knew that more dangerous monsters will be coming, thus the elite was sawed for those monsters to be dealt with, all while reducing the casualties wherever possible.
"Great work out there!" the commander nodded with grateful, yet still grim look on his face once Jack was back on the walls once again, his breath sped up from all that swinging and exercise. not every day did one jump into monster horde to buy time for their own side to clean up the engagement zones, lest they get overwhelmed. "I am going to need you to do that at least one more time. Can you manage?"
"Need time first." the merc grumbled back, slumping against the wall, seemingly meditating to recover faster.
"Good to know." he turned and once again barked out orders "Move it fools! We are the last line of defence. Behind us are our wives, parents and children! Don't let these mangy beasts to steal them from us!"
