A little adventure

"Hans" "... Don't want to forget what happened tonight."

"Alvis" "In that case, you only have one other option: Join the Human Spirit. We can't just let you do whatever you want freely."

"Hans" "If I join the Human Spirit, what will I have to do?"

"Alvis" "We'll show you how to tap into your spiritual abilities and improve them. Plus, you'll get some training that's similar to what a cop goes through, since we often have to act like one to handle different situations… After you finish your training, you'll be sent on missions; they'll usually be simple things that don't involve anything spiritual, so you'll be mostly working as some kind of special agent, but sometimes you'll be sent on missions that involve spirituality; they are not very common, though."

"Hans" "Then, once I start going on missions, will you pay me?"

"Alvis" "Due to the dangers that being a Human Spirit agent carries, you'll be paid 1000 euros per month even while you are mostly training and learning; once you start going on missions, this pay will double, and you will get 2000 euros. If you go up through the ranks, you'll be paid even more, as you will be sent on more missions and have more responsibilities."

"Hans" "Ranks? How do these ranks work?"

"Alvis" "This will be explained to you in time, but right now we should probably end this meeting. Come here tomorrow at eight; you will start your classes and meet your classmates… You should know that the ages are pretty irregular, as everyone goes through this training no matter the age, so there will be people younger and older than you… Oh, and Manuel is one of the teachers, so you'll be seeing him frequently."

I look at Manuel, and he nods to me.

"Manuel" "Bring your ID and other documents tomorrow; you'll need them for the registration."

"Alvis" "This should be all for now; Manuel will accompany you towards the exit. Be careful on your way back home."

  "Hans" "Thanks, bye."

Manuel opens the door and leaves, so I follow him and start walking at his side.

"Manuel" "I know that you are confused right now and everything is a bit hard to understand, but tomorrow I'll start by explaining how the spiritual energy and spiritual abilities work, so don't worry."

  I nod.

  "Hans" "Ok, thanks."

I already know that, but whatever…

"Manuel" "You seem pretty young; are you of legal age?"

  I nod again.

"Hans" "Yeah, I'm 19 years old."

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Manuel" "Are you studying anything? I know that this can make it complicated."

  I shake my head.

"Hans" "I was working in a warehouse, but that won't be a problem."

  "Manuel" "That's good, then."

When he finishes saying that, we finally reach the exit.

"Manuel" "Hey, kid… I know Alvis only told me to accompany you towards the exit, but I can go with you to your house, if you want."

  Kid? C'mon, I just told him that I'm 19…

"Hans" "No, thanks… I honestly want some time alone to think…"

  He nods.

"Manuel" "I understand; some people prefer to deal with things on their own… Be careful on your way back, bye."

  "Hans" "Bye."

After that he turns around and enters the Academy, so I start going to my house.

In the end, you chose to join the Human Spirit.

It was the best option; had I chosen to forget, they would have probably kept an eye on me for a time, and I didn't want to deal with that.

The salary really comes in handy, too. My sister is still studying, so I need to pay for food, rent, etc.

That's right, your sister is probably waiting for you; it's pretty late.

I look at my phone and see that it's 10 o'clock.

  "Hans" "Sigh… She's probably worried."

After walking for a couple of minutes, I finally arrive at my house, and the first thing that receives me after opening the door is…

"Nadia" "Finally! Where were you? I was getting worried."

"Hans" "I got fired, so I had a little adventure."

She widens her eyes in surprise.

"Nadia" "... It's because you kept arriving late, right?"

  "Hans" "... Yeah."

She looks down, clearly feeling guilty.

"Nadia" "It's my fault; I don't help enough with things in the house, so you always have too much to do."

  I shake my head.

"Hans" "It's not your fault; you should just focus on your studies and get that law degree that you want so you don't end up like me, who only finished high school."

Even after I say that, she still looks down.

"Hans" "Hey, don't worry, I already got another job."

"Nadia" "Huh? How did you get another job so fast?"

"Hans" "I got lucky… They only pay me the minimum salary, but they also only paid me that in my other job, so it's not a problem."

"Nadia" "Sigh… Thank god… I left you dinner in the fridge; I'll finish my homework and go to bed. Good night."

  "Hans" "Good night, Nadia."

After she leaves, I go to the kitchen.

You seem to care a lot for each other.

… We only have ourselves; our mom abandoned us, and our dad died two years ago. The only reason why they didn't take us to a child protection center or to live with our uncle is because I was already of legal age, and thank god for that; our uncle is the only family we have left, and we don't have a good relationship with him.

  Why?

… I don't want to talk about that.

The microwave beeps, indicating that the food finished heating up.

I put the plate on the table, and I start eating; it's only some simple macaroni, but I do like macaroni a lot.

Starting tomorrow, you'll live a lot of crazy shit… Are you ready?

  "Hans" "Sigh… Yeah, I'm ready."
