Chapter 29

Here is the edited passage with corrections only to spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and minor consistency issues (no changes to style, content, wording, or plot):

I glanced around uncertain of all the whitewashed walls until a kid I had seen from the academy walked up to me. I had to catch him because the ship shook hard. Harder than any tremor I had felt on Titan, that was for sure.

I lifted the boy to his feet and looked at his face. He seemed to recognize me and gasped.

"Your name is Wyatt, isn't it?" he said as his lower lip trembled. "If you would follow me that would be great."

I started to follow the kid through the bowels of the ship. He seemed remarkably scared of being alone with me and every time he saw a person around the corner he would hurry to catch up with them and be reluctant to leave.

"Where exactly are you taking me to?" I asked the kid. He mentioned something about the commanding general of the entire Dark Matter Manipulator Armada, though he mumbled it like he was afraid of being heard.

"What's wrong with you?" I asked him. "Are you okay? You seem like you're scared of something."

  He nodded his head timidly.

"Sorry," he mumbled but then spoke up almost like he had remembered I had told him to talk louder. "It's just after seeing you destroy half of a planet..."

I sort of understood how he was feeling. If I had seen some kid do that I would keep my distance as well, that was for sure.

The rest of the walk was silent until we got to a door that proclaimed it was home to the head admiral of the entire spaceforce. The boy gestured for me to go in so I did.

In the room was a high-backed chair facing a monitor illustrating the battle that was taking place not too far away. Based on what I saw, things were not looking very good.

The high-backed chair spun around and I gasped when I saw who it was. It was Bajer. His face seemed worn and grim but when he saw me he smiled. It had seemed like a lifetime ago that I'd seen him.

"Well, well, well," he said eyeing me up and down. "Look what we have here."

I felt timid under his gaze but I still held my chin high.

"So it was you," Bajer said stroking the beard that had formed on his chin. "I had always wondered how someone so young could manipulate water."

His statement brought me all the way back to the Dark Matter Manipulator ship that had brought me here and the fight I had had with that bully in the arena. The memory made me wish that bullies were still what I had to fight.

"So what are you anyway?" he said getting out of his chair. "Some type of unknown alien?"

I laughed to myself and Bajer saw the glint in my eye.

"No, goodness no," I said but then immediately doubted what I had said. I remembered what the darklings had said about my ancestry. About the ancient blood that ran through my veins.

"Are you sure about that?" Bajer said as he must've seen the hesitation in my eyes. "You know that there are some very interesting rumors from the species gimlong that live on Titan. Something about a knight in shining armor that will save humanity."

I shifted uncomfortably in my armor. I suddenly felt self-conscious about the weight that was on my back.

"That brings me to another very important question. If you don't manipulate Dark Matter, what DO you manipulate?"

I conjured up a ball of Matter in my hands and made it levitate ever so slightly. The entire room was lit up with its glory.

"I call it Matter," I said. "Based off of what I have learned it is the exact opposite of Dark Matter and when the two collide this Matter always has the upper hand."

  Bajer seemed amazed at this.

"What all can it do?" he asked.

"Everything that Dark Matter can do but more," I said. "I get the stuff from living things and can use it for almost anything. Heck, the way I got here was with Matter."

"Are you saying you didn't use a spaceship of any sort?"

"No," I said. "The Matter itself kept my very essence alive."

Bajer fell back into his chair in shock.

"That's incredible," he said. "Are you willing to fight?"

I nodded my head and explained to him that this was why I had come here. I had come to avenge my parents.

"What dark thoughts for a young man," Bajer said stroking his beard. "Well, if you want to fight I will make you fight. We are currently most weak on the flanks so I want you to go and get rid of the Darklings that are creating havoc there. I have a team of people waiting outside to transport you there."

I turned to go but Bajer stopped me.

"Wyatt," he said. "One last thing you must know. We were going to lose this battle but now you have showed up. An unexpected advantage and ally. I hate to put this pressure on you but I have to say it: you are our only hope."

Bajer dismissed me with a wave of his hand and I left the office to be greeted by a bunch of men in military garb.

They rushed me to a little ship and put me in a cockpit.

"What are you doing?" I said panicked. "I've never flown in my life?!"

The men around me raised their eyebrows and quickly got me out of there. Within a couple of minutes I was standing on a control bridge. Somewhere that I could easily see the battle.

Without a second thought I put a shield around the ship and we took off.

"Dark Matter shield failed to initiate," I heard a voice say over a speaker somewhere. I cursed. Those idiots were trying to put up their own shield.

"Hey you," I said to the guy next to me. "Tell those guys trying to put up the shield to stop. I already have one put up ten times more powerful than anything you could muster."

The man darted off to go tell whoever was trying to mess with my shield to stop.

"Shield deactivated," I heard the loudspeaker say. I let out a grunt of satisfaction.

The ship started to move and in moments we were out of the mothership and headed towards one of the flanks. I sensed that Dark Matter from the enemy was attacking us but nothing was getting through because of my shield.

"None of the Dark Matter is getting through!" I heard a very excited voice say over the loudspeaker. It was greeted by an enthusiastic cheer.

I smiled as we raced towards the flank of the battle. When we got there I was well aware that things weren't going too good. Many wrecks of ships that once fought now floated through space and with a start I realized that Harper or Michael could've been in one of those ships.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked the man standing next to me. He looked surprised that I didn't know what to do. He told me anyway.

"You see that big black ship over there?" he said pointing. "You need to take that thing out."

I looked at the ship he was pointing at. It was so big that at first I just thought that it was empty space but then I realized that it was an actual ship.

When I reached out my senses I felt one very big dark force commanding it along with smaller forces that were just as dark surrounding him.

"Tell whoever is commanding this thing to get all the other ships in the vicinity to put down their shields," I told the man next to me.

  "But..."

"Just do it," I said exasperated. When would they learn? I reached out my consciousness again and felt the friendly ships' shields around us go down. As quick as I could I put up a shield for each of them with Matter.

"Tell them not to fire any Dark Matter out of the shield," I said. "Only fire bullets or whatever."

The man next to me nodded his head.

I cast out my consciousness to the big ship looming ahead of us in the darkness and conjured up a great big sword in space just like the one I had done with the behemoth.

I took that sword and brought it down on the ship. I reached out with my consciousness and felt that all the smaller Darlings had perished but the bigger one was still at large.

I opened my eyes and saw small fires were erupting on the ship because we were firing upon it. I had brought down their shield.

I asked the man next to me how I could leave the ship and he looked at me horrified like I had a death wish.

Still, he hurried me out of the ship into a decompression room and finally I was out floating in space. Thankfully, I felt the weird thing in my brain activate and I was still alive.

I powered up my boosters and went at full speed towards the enemy ship as I activated the shield around me to deflect the bullets the size of a truck flying around me.

While I went I powered up the rune in my head and felt my power swell in size. I did it twice more and by that time I was only inches away from the enemy ship. Without a second thought I burst through the ship, stumbling into a room full of unconscious people on the floor. I watched in terror as their bodies liquified because of the hole I had made in the wall.

My little stunt was making the entire ship groan and creak. I reached out my senses and felt the powerful darkling somewhere above me. The darkling was up to something. His very being was getting bigger and bigger and I felt that at any second he was going to blow.

HE IS GOING TO BLOW, I thought remembering how Austin had self-destructed. He was going to die anyway so he was going to sacrifice himself.

I boosted myself back out of the ship and put up a shield around the entire thing right as it blew. I felt my shield strain right away but I reinforced it over and over until the blast was over.

The effort took a lot out of me though. I flew back towards the ship that had brought me here and when I got out from the decompression room I collapsed onto the floor.

Medics ran up to me and rushed me through the halls. Before I knew it I was back in Bajer's office looking him in the face.

"That was incredible," he said his eyes shining with excitement. "I thought you were just going to take down a little ship or something, not the one that was leading the entire fight!"

I grunted and tried my best to fight unconsciousness. The darkness was creeping into the corners of my eyes. Bajer seemed to recognize that something was wrong.

"Are you okay?" he said rushing over to me. "What happened?"

"I used up all my Matter to keep back the explosion," I explained between breaths. "It took a lot out of me. I won't be able to fight again unless I go back to Titan or somewhere with a lot of Matter."

I looked up to see if Bajer had heard me but he seemed to be distracted by something. Almost like he had been talking with someone on his flesh-watch.

I examined his face as it grew pale and alarms started to flash. Finally Bajer got off of the flesh-watch.

"Wyatt," he said looking into my eyes. "Your flank was taking out all the ships because you took out the commander but now they know you're there. The Dark Lord himself came and obliterated everything. We are forced to retreat closer to Earth. Our ships will have to orbit around it for the final stand."

I clenched my fists. The Dark Lord was going to destroy everyone I loved. First he had taken my parents and now he was going to destroy my friends, my planet, and most likely life altogether.

I tried to stand up but fell to the ground. I was in no state to fight the most powerful being alive, that was for sure.

"When do we enter the orbit?" I managed to say.

"Ten minutes," Bajer said. "In ten minutes humanity will make its final stand."

I tried to take a deep breath but instead I felt pain in my chest. It was all too much for me. I was not ready in any way to fight the Dark Lord. But I was going to have to fight. It was my destiny.
