Chapter 3: The Useful Lad.

?The slums of Okelhaven smelled of damp earth and rot—a glitch in the Adulation Engine’s golden filter that no amount of light could bleach away.

?Kai leaned against the brick, hand jolting with purple static. Ozone and burnt hair.

  ?“Serene… what was that?”

?“So I’m a battery or a corpse,” Kai wheezed, wiping cold sweat. “Fine. I need a fight, and I need it now.”

?Heavy boots echoed. Three men in polished silver. To the slums, they were tax collectors. To Kai’s UI, they were red-boxed targets.

  ?[ASSET CLASS: THRESHOLD GUARDIANS]

[DATA: CLERICAL ENFORCERS. MISSION: REINFORCE THE 'ORDERLY KINGDOM' NARRATIVE.]

?The lead Guardian didn't look angry; he looked scheduled. He kicked over a basket of tubers. A mother clutched her child—not out of tragedy, but because the script demanded "Yield."

?“Tax day,” the Guardian barked, his sneer a practiced routine. “The Prince’s light isn't free. Pay for the protection you’re given, or lose the life you've driven.”

?Kai stumbled into the light, his violet silk tunic a garish middle finger to the mud.

?“Oi! Tin-man!” Kai shouted, his voice a pitchy, arrogant trill.

?The guards froze. The lead turned. “Baron Vane? Back in the gutter where you belong, you pathetic soak?”

?“I’m looking for my dignity,” Kai slurred, leaning on a cart. “But all I see are three lapdogs in silver suits. Tell me—does Arthur make you scrub his floors, or are you just here to collect the chores?”

?The air went cold. The villagers looked away. The guard’s face turned a violent, systematic crimson.

?“You’re a broken toy, Vane,” the guard hissed, grabbing Kai’s collar.

?“Is that a threat?” Kai grinned, teeth flashing white through the static. “Because your breath is a bigger hazard to the crown than any monster in the town.”

?The first punch caught Kai in the gut. No warning. Just the wet thud of metal on meat.

?Kai coughed copper-tasting bile, a smirk tugging at his lips. “My grandmother hits with more spite, and she’s been dead since the First Light.”

?The rhythm of violence began. A boot to the ribs. A gauntlet to the jaw.

?The purple static settled into a dull, thrumming heat. The pain was just data—a deposit into a bank account.

?“Enough,” the lead guard panted, drawing a heavy mace. “The Prince wants peace, but accidents happen in the grease. A ‘Lost Asset’ is no loss at all.”

?He swung for the temple. A killing blow.

  ?“Serene. Release 10%.”

?Kai didn't parry. He simply shifted. As the mace whistled past, Kai “tripped.” He caught the guard’s heel and leaned his shoulder into the man’s chest, venting the stored force in a single, silent burst.

  ?BOOM.

?The guard launched backward, a silver blur slamming through crates and stone before landing face-first in the filth.

?The others stood paralyzed. Kai stood up, dusting off his ruined silk.

?“Terrible floors,” Kai whined, his voice returning to a grating lurch. “Very slippery. Someone should file a grievance for such a grievance.”

?He ducked into the shadows before they could breathe.

  ?“Exhilarating,” Kai whispered, chest heaving.

?“Exhilarating? Or just a suicide mission?”

?The voice was ice. A woman in dark leathers perched on a fire escape, amber eyes fixed on him with cold judgment. Elara.

?“You’re Baron Vane,” she said, dropping down with a silent thud. She didn't point her blade, but her grip was white-knuckled. “I was waiting to bleed those guards. You just cost me three sets of steel and a meal.”

  ?“My apologies,” Kai offered.

?She stepped into his space, her nose inches from his. “You took a beating that kills men, then sent a Guardian flying like a feather. Who are you under the leather?”

  ?[WARNING: CURIOSITY DETECTED.]

  [DECAY ACCELERATING: -1.5%/MIN]

?Kai winced. He couldn't let her like him. He needed her sharp. He needed her angry.

?“I’m a man who hates silver,” Kai said, pulling a stolen apple from his pocket and taking a loud, obnoxious bite. He offered the bruised remains to her. “And I’m the man who knows your little riot is missing a soul.”

?Elara narrowed her eyes. “And what’s that?”

?“The Jester,” Kai grinned, the purple static flickering in his eyes. “Every tragedy needs a bit of a show, or the crowd will never know when to go.."
