There was a hole in the wall.
The garden sector was in the middle of the north outer wall. I wasn’t sure what was on the eastern side of the sector we were in, but considering Eveth was working on clearing the docks, I had a feeling either that sector was clear or it was next on the list. I hoped it was the first.
“You lying..!”
I threw the fastest fireball I could make at her face. I didn’t have time to listen to her yell at me and I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold the horde in front of me off for long. I hoped that the fire magic would make her back up.
She crushed it in her hand right in front of her face.
That wasn’t good.
Her purple eyes darkened. “YOU DIE!!!”
The Zombies charged the gate only to run into an invisible barrier. Their fists sounded like drums as they pounded on the magic. It didn’t take too many of those before cracks started to appear in the air where the barrier was starting to break.
“FINE! YOU WANT TO PLAY???” The Touched woman threw out both of her hands. Two gusts of wind blasted Zombies over the wall, sending them rolling across the field.
Eveth rushed out from behind the tent behind me, her sword skewering one through the chest before it could get up.
I pulled out my sword and ran magic into it. The blade began glowing purple as I ran to the closest Zombie and decapitated it as it stood. I shot a small fireball at another one, but that wasn’t enough to kill it. Though when the flaming Zombie ran into the side of one of the tents, catching the whole thing on fire, I was pretty sure that it was going to burn up before it got free.

Five more Zombies were flung over the wall. The Zombies that had been part of the first wave were on their feet and running through the tents. Eveth and I were killing Zombies, but they were being thrown over the wall faster than we could kill them.
I didn’t know how much magic I had left, but I didn’t want to push my mind too far and exhaust myself before I did any physical exertion. Still, the flaming Zombie gave me an idea. I threw fireballs at the closest tents. The Humans should have moved away from the gate the moment the guards fled. If anyone had stayed behind, their tent catching on fire would be a good motivator to get out.
“We can’t keep this up!” I swung my sword at a Zombie that was running right at me. Except the Zombie wasn’t trying to attack me. It was trying to get around me. The Touched could tell that the Humans were getting away and she was trying to cut them off.
“I know that!” Eveth cut a Zombie in half. She wiped her face with the back of her arm, then swung diagonally through the closest Zombie to her. “We just need to buy time!”
The barrier in front of the gate shattered. The bars started groaning as the horde pushed against it.
That looked like a good thing to catch on fire, so I made a fireball the size of an apple and threw it at the compact pressure of Zombie that was trying to burst the bars open.
The fireball slammed into the ground halfway between myself and the gate. The Touched woman landed on top of it. The brunette glared at me and she landed in a crouch.
“You should have taken my offer.” She ground her teeth together. “Now I’m going to make you watch as I turn every Human here, then…”
A Zombie head slapped her.
Eveth had a huge smile on her face. “That felt good.”
Loose dirt rose from the ground while streams of air swirled around the Touched woman’s arms. There was nothing but hate in her eyes as she focused on the blonde. “Lord Doswan is going to love picking you apart.”
The bars on the gate gave one last loud creak before they slammed on the ground. Whatever Eveth said was drowned as the sound of the gate breaking bled into growls and snarls of hundreds of Zombies running at us.
