After a while, they reached the city.
Though it was only about half the size of Kurani in the south, it was at least just as busy.
The city was primarily known for its historical significance.
In addition to many ancient buildings and landmarks, it also housed the only museum in the entire country.
This earned the city its name:
"The City on the Edge of Time."
The wagon was set to drop them off directly in front of the garrison, marking the end of their long journey.
In the final minutes, they discussed the reason for their deployment.
“What do you think we’ll be doing here?”
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
“Probably just patrolling or something. Most new recruits get sent here, don’t they?”
“That’s true.
...
But do you think we might get a special assignment or something?”
Some began to laugh.
“Yeah, right. First day on duty and you’re already getting a special assignment. What’s it going to be? Tracking down rebels in their hideout?”
“No. I just meant, maybe there’s something extra we could do to prove ourselves.”
“I don’t think so. They probably just want to see if we can follow orders and stay out of trouble. What more could there be?”
“Maybe we’ll still find a way to prove ourselves.”
“Better not, or we’ll end up drawing the commander’s wrath!”
At that moment, the wagon came to a halt.
“We’re here!” called the driver, who had put up with them for the entire journey.
They grabbed their bags, containing their few necessary belongings, and climbed out.
They stood before the open gates of a magnificent building.
It almost looked like a small palace, surrounded by spacious grounds where soldiers trained or enjoyed their leisure time.
Naturally, the entire facility, like all other garrisons, was completely fenced off and constantly guarded.
Chances were, this task would soon fall to them as well.
As they entered, San caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye of the civilians outside the grounds.
They looked at him with fear—and a small hint of hatred.
