76 - Underhanded Tactics

After the Dragon Quest movie screening, the egg-shaped seats slowly opened, releasing the occupants.

The teachers, one by one, emerged from the seats, still a little dazed.

They seemed to have just woken from a sweet dream.

Lingering in its afterglow, unwilling and unable to forget.

It took a while for them to fully return to reality.

"That Wonderland 6D theater was awesome!"

"Totally! I'd go back and watch it again, and I don't even have kids!"

"Haha, embarrassing confession: I might become a regular?"

"Hey, Mr. Smith, aren't you single? Where are you getting the kids to bring here?"

"Nah, I meant I'd come on my own, not with kids!"

  "Oh, gotcha!"

"I can't believe how far technology has come. My movie memories are still stuck in regular theaters!"

Jake walked up to the chattering group, a smile on his face.

"So, everyone, satisfied with the theater?"

"Any chance the Department of Education is considering Starlight Amusement Park for their field trip program?"

"Satisfied, very satisfied!" A middle-aged teacher stepped forward, beaming. "About the partnership, we apologize, but we can't give you an answer yet. We need to discuss it internally before reaching a decision."

"However, we have a very positive impression of Starlight Amusement Park!"

While the teacher didn't provide a definite yes, the implied favor was clear.

It seemed like a done deal.

  Jake grinned.

After visiting the Wonderland 6D theater, the evaluation team took a quick tour of the other attractions.

Each one similarly blew them away.

Though these more extreme rides weren't exactly kid-friendly, they piqued some teachers' interest.

These rides are amazing and fun! I will come and try when i am free.

Time flew by, and darkness gradually fell.

When the streetlights flickered to life, the teachers realized they'd spent far longer at Starlight Amusement Park than they thought.

"Crap, it's my girlfriend's birthday! How did I stay here so long?"

"Oh man, my kid's waiting at school for me to pick him up!"

"Damn it... We were supposed to do a quick walkthrough and head back early! Why didn't anyone remind me?"

"Haha, we all got so caught up we forgot!"

The teachers hurried towards the bus.

The driver was practically asleep, yawning like crazy. Seeing them, he grumbled.

"What happened to you guys? You said half an hour, tops! It's been two hours!"

"And you call yourselves teachers? Don't you know the importance of keeping your word? Bad example for the kids!"

  The teachers just chuckled sheepishly.

They screwed up, no doubt about it.

But it wasn't entirely their fault; Starlight Amusement Park was just too darn interesting.

The bus slowly pulled out of Starlight Amusement Park.

The teachers seized the opportunity to get down to business.

"Alright folks, we've seen all the parks. It's time to decide on our partner."

"Share your thoughts, then we'll vote."

The bus buzzed with chatter as the teachers discussed their options.

"Steiny Amusement Park and Kidtopia were good, but Starlight Amusement Park was the best!"

"Totally! Starlight Amusement Park all the way!"

"Seriously, anyone who doesn't pick Starlight Amusement Park is clearly on someone's payroll!"

About ten minutes later, the team leader stood up.

  "Let's vote!

"Those in favor of Steiny Amusement Park, raise your hand!"

Silence. No one raised their hand.

"Those in favor of Square Amusement Park, raise your hand!"

  Still nothing.

"Those in favor of Kidtopia, raise your hand!"

  Still no one.

The leader smiled. "Looks like we're all on the same page. Those in favor of Starlight Amusement Park... raise your hand!"

Before he could finish, he shot his hand up.

Then a sea of hands followed.

  "Unanimous decision!" The leader announced.

The result was quickly relayed to the Department of Education and the various amusement parks.

Hanging up the phone, Jake announced, "The evaluation team has chosen Starlight Amusement Park as the Department of Education's field trip program partner!"

  "Seriously? No kidding?"

"Haha, we beat out Steiny, a huge park!"

"I'm curious what those teachers saw in the 6D theater. They went in all high and mighty, and came out like kids, jabbering and asking questions like crazy! Total attitude shift!"

Jake chuckled. "We might be swamped for a while, but bear with me. I'll give you all a bonus afterward!"

The crew erupted in cheers again.

  ...

In stark contrast to the celebratory atmosphere at Starlight Amusement Park, the mood at the other parks was somber. The owners were stunned when they received the news.

The smaller parks were prepared for failure, but they never imagined Starlight Amusement Park, not Steiny Amusement Park or Kidtopia, would win.

The executives at Steiny Amusement Park and Kidtopia were utterly baffled.

  "BANG!"

The director of Steiny Amusement Park in Riverdale kicked the coffee table in his office, sending it flying.

  "What the hell happened?"

"You said this was a sure thing!"

Two nervous-looking young men stood near the overturned table.

"Boss, I visited Starlight Amusement Park once. It's a tiny place. Something fishy must've gone on for them to become the Department of Education's pick!"

The other guy nodded vigorously. "Yeah, they must have bribed the evaluation team!"

The director nodded. "Can't rule that out. There's no way we would've lost to Starlight Amusement Park otherwise."

"Boss, we can expose their shady dealings! We can find dirt, leak it to the media, and pressure them to change their decision. The Department of Education will choose Steiny Amusement Park in the end!"

The director's eyes lit up. "Good! When the field trips start, you guys disguise yourselves as parents and investigate Starlight Amusement Park. Get plenty of footage of disappointed kids!"

  "Got it!"

  "We'll get right on it!"
