Ch. 38 - Worthy to Stand

The intensity of the fight between the two peak blessed humans had eased up as the two stood off against each other. Charles’s muscles had increased in mass, arteries pulsated on him from the face down.

“...That’s what you used to kill the blessed slaughterer, I’m assuming,” With a drop of sweat streaking down her face, Charlotte deduced. “I’m not amused. Die.”

Charlotte made the first move as ground spikes were projected from the ground and beamed towards her opponent. He stood his ground as the spikes closed in, and Charlotte witnessed as Charles disappeared from the path.

What!? With widened eyes, Charlotte stretched her hands out as her eyes tracked Charles. She summoned several spikes, but they were destroyed just as quickly as they were created. He had leaped in the air, and Charlotte had attempted to swat him out the sky with even more spikes.

Striking the air to his side, Charles had propelled himself out of the path with strong air pressure. Tilting her head to the side and furrowing her eyebrows, Charlotte snapped her fingers.

Although he had avoided the initial straight line rush of the snake-like spikes, Charles suddenly received gashes on his body – his wounds were thanks to smaller spikes which sprouted on the body of the longer parent spike.

With a grin, Charles raised his arms in the air and clasped his hands. In one quick motion, Charles performed a downward strike. The air pressure generated from his attack not only pulverized the giant spikes, but also the asphalt road, fauna and infrastructure in the immediate area were ripped apart.

“Guh!” Reflexively shielding her face with her arms from the debris flying past her, Charlotte’s hair and clothes rippled and flowed violently in the wind. “What in the–”

The ear to ear grinning Charles wasted no time as he appeared right next to Charlotte, cocking his fist back. Her jaw tightened and her eyes flicked up as she witnessed him in her peripheral vision. His punch never met the mark as rock fragments which converged and molded together had shielded Charlotte.

With more sweat dripping from her face, Charlotte darted away from her enemy.

“Come on! More!” Vocalizing his excitement, Charles yelled as he chased her. As she ran, Charlotte had created even more spikes behind her in hopes of tripping up her opponent. This proved futile as Charles wasn’t slowed down in the slightest while he destroyed her formations with his explosive punches. “More!”

Shit! I underestimated him– Charlotte remarked as she continued her pace, only for Charles to crash straight into the ground behind her. Her footing was disrupted with the asphalt erupting, causing Charlotte to stumble. Shit!

By the time Charlotte had regained her balance, Charles was once again in her face. Just like before, the alarmed and panicked Charlotte was able to react and shield herself with hardened rocks. Well, ‘shield’ may have been inaccurate as Charles had punched right through her guard and delivered a strike to her jaw.

Like a ragdoll, Charlotte was launched multiple blocks away.

“Heh, she dampened my strike with those rocks, huh?” Charles remarked as he gazed at the fist he used to strike her. “Her reaction time is good.”

Pulling herself out of the rubble, Charlotte had walked out of a ruined home. Her jaw was visibly bruised and swollen, and blood had run down from her nose and the bottom of her bruised lip.

“Nice, you’re up!” Charles remarked as he dragged his right foot backwards. “Let’s continue.”

Pulverizing the ground with his leap, Charles had rushed towards Charlotte again. Veins manifested themselves on Charlotte’s head as she stretched both hands out. Before Charles’s eyes, countless rock snakes had charged at him.

Buildings, vehicles, concrete walls, street lights…It never mattered what was in the way as the spikes drove straight through them like butter to get to Charlotte’s target. City blocks were being severely morphed to create these spikes, and Charles simply clenched his fist with a grin.

  BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A constant, destructive stream of air gusts and shockwaves tore through the area as Charles constantly struck at the oncoming spikes. They were in a standstill as Charlotte did her best to create and send more spikes.

The standstill lasted several seconds, until Charlotte’s outstretched arms were slowly getting forced back at the hands of the constant waves.

Urgh! I knew he was strong…but this is completely insane! It wouldn’t have been as bad if he didn’t move so fast and attacked this quickly! Charlotte internally pondered as she gritted her teeth, trying her best to win this clash. He’s so damn aggressive when he’s attacking too! How can someone be this strong with just punches and kicks!?

“No! I’m not losing this!” With her declaration, the countless fragments of many destroyed rock structures had begun to levitate. They had been broken up to the point of looking like sand. “Die!”

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

As Charles struck the oncoming spikes, the sand-like fragments had slammed into his side. It covered his body as the fragments carried him away – any buildings that weren’t fully destroyed by spikes driving through them were shredded and diced as the fragments passed through.

It failed to carry him around for too long as Charles fanned them away with a powerful clap. It did have its effects as from his face to his body, Charles had countless bloody lines.

“Haha! Yes–” Charles yelled with excitement, but Charlotte wanted none of it, as his body was immediately surrounded by concrete as the ground rose up around him. Charlotte was unable to follow up, as the concrete erupted off its body due to the professional muscle flexing from Charles.

“Wha-” For the third time, Charles had closed in on Charlotte and was about to strike her as he cocked back his left arm. The perplexed Charlotte had summoned rocks to mold together and protect her right side, but there was no strike…at least not on the rocks.

With widened eyes, Charles had slammed not his left, but his right fist into straight into her stomach. Blood ejected from her mouth as his fist sunk into her gut, her eyes widened at the realization of Charles’s clean strike.

Even more buildings were destroyed as Charlotte was blasted through them. She not only crashed through buildings, but Charlotte’s body was ragdolled as she violently bounced across the ground.

Charlotte laid on the ground for a few moments, until Charles had casually strolled up.

“Heh, that shouldn’t have taken you out, right?” Charles questioned as he folded his arms. Finally showing signs of movement, Charlotte struggled to get on her knees. “I made sure to hold back, you know.”

H-He faked me…out? Clenching her stomach and vomiting up more blood, Charlotte pondered as she panted. I definitely have…internal damage. What the hell is this monster?

Charles patiently waited as she mustered the strength to stand back on her feet.

Urrgghhh…I’ve trained my body for so long, so I thought I’d be able to avoid direct hits…but I failed, and it’ll be bad fighting like this… Charlotte pondered. I can damage and possibly kill him with the rock fragment shavings sawing at his body, but can I land that technique before he hits me again?

“Hmm, this was quite fun, but how much longer can you fight for?” Charles questioned as his eyebrows dipped and his gaze fell to the floor. “I thought I’d get the same level of excitement as back then. Sigh, I guess it’s not you, huh?”

With her eyes flickering once more and a sudden step back with her right foot, Charlotte witnessed Charles preparing to run at her.

“Well, whatever. Why don’t we make this as fun as possible then!?” Regaining the spark in his eyes, Charles darted towards her. Before they could resume their bout, Charles’s eyes had quickly wandered to the side.

His eyes picked up the presence of dozens of super soldiers, darting towards him with immense urgency. He never moved an inch, as the white uniform donning infantry gathered around him.

“Huh?” Charles uttered as he looked around, Charlotte raised her eyebrows with equal confusion.

“We finally located and caught up to the criminal, Charles Warner,” A super soldier uttered. “We will aid you in eliminating this bastard, Charlotte.”

  “W-Wait, are you…insane–”

They never took the time to listen to Charlotte, as several men rushed and slammed their fists into Charles’s body. Their eyes widened as their punches lost all momentum upon making contact, as if a regular man had struck a concrete wall.

  “W-What the–”

With a snarl coming from his throat and baring his teeth at the soldiers, Charles swiped his fist at them. Like swatting away flies, the clearly inferior opponents were knocked away and ricocheting off of buildings as they soared.

The other super soldiers were stunned as all they could do was gaze at him with widened eyes.

“Tsk, you guys hit like a bunch of children. Don’t you dare interrupt this battle,” Charles remarked with furrowed eyebrows. “Weaklings aren't worthy of standing on this stage.”

“...Useless idiots,” Charlotte remarked as she still clenched her stomach, wiping the blood from her mouth with her other hand. “Go deal with shit in your paygrade…”

“Man, this feels like shit now…whatever,” Charles remarked with a frown, before immediately charging towards Charlotte. “Let’s just–”

His stride was impeded mid run as his limbs never listened to him. His limbs jerked to the side and every movement was met with resistance. His curiosity and confusion was answered as unseen lines bit into his skin, and blood rose up from those streaks.

“Oh, I remember this,” Charles muttered with a smirk.

“Am I worthy of standing on this stage of yours?” Turning the heads of the two fighters, the feminine voice along with the tapping of footsteps sparked their attention. “It’s been a while, Charles Warner.”

Charles had known this woman all too well, and his disappointment was immediately washed away with the sight of her. Charlotte had taken advantage of his restricted movements, as she had commanded multiple spikes to form and drive into his chest.

Ripping the near invisible strings around his body and launching him away, the spikes had hit their mark.

“Huff, I was wondering where the hell you were,” Charlotte remarked as the Queen Deathbringer had approached her. “Since you wanted to fight this bastard too.”

“Sorry, I’m late,” The Queen Deathbringer remarked. “Have you been fighting him alone all this time?”

  “Mhmm…this guy is a monster,”

  “...I see.”

“Haha! Things have gotten fun again!” Hopping out of the building he was slammed into, Charles yelled. “What a way to bring the mood back up again!”

The spikes which struck his chest have left damage, as patches of blood pooled from different parts of his upper body.

“...So you are able to damage him this much by yourself. We have a good chance then,” The Queen Deathbringer remarked. “I will support you…so, we will kill him right here.”

  “Oh?”

“Yeah! That’s what I like to hear!” Charles shouted. “Come at me with all you’ve got!”

The chief had momentarily closed her eyes – the images of her now deceased blessed hunter allies had replaced itself from the sight of Charles. They played like a slideshow, but the sudden images of Mohawk and Twintails had forced its way through like someone changing a channel.

With a sudden flicker, the super soldier flashed her eyes back open.

  “Charles Warner…we will eliminate you.”
