Ch. 40 - Primary Goal

“Starting to regret that middle finger, yet?” With a smug grin, Mohawk remarked as he used his knuckles and wiped the blood that seeped down his mouth. “Shit not as sweet, huh?”

Zack’s panicked eyes had been glued on Twintails, his eyebrows spiking as she loaded three arrows in each of the arrow rests of the bow. She had released the grip of the string and fired the three arrows. An explosion erupted with a violent detonation from the fletching and nock, propelling the point and the remaining shaft of the arrow with a sonic boom.

“Urgh!” Narrowly throwing himself out of the way of the zooming projectiles, Zack avoided another dose of thermite. The shipping container it tore through was not as lucky, as the entry and exit points were littered with sparks.

Self preservation had kicked in as Zack immediately made a run for it.

“Hmm, he avoided them. I guess that’s expected,” Twintails had remarked as she hopped off the building and landed beside her comrade. “Despite being made to soar at mach seven, the thermite arrows are best as sneak attacks against a strong blessed criminal.”

“For someone like him, you don’t need to rely on sneaking him to win,” Mohawk remarked as he trudged forward. “He’s going to die anyway.”

“You don’t look like you’re doing too hot,” Twintails teased. “Zack really gave you a hard time, huh?”

“Ah, shaddup,” Mohawk remarked in a high pitched voice. “Let’s just take care of him and go help the chief.”

  “Yes. Let’s do that.”

Zack had rushed across the streets, grabbing his upper back and grunting occasionally as he ran.

Ha…it hurts…so goddamn much. It’s like I’m getting burned from the inside. Zack pondered as he ran, drenched in a cold sweat. His vision had blurred occasionally, as if dipping in and out of consciousness. And then that animal…it feels like my skull got split!

His stride had suddenly broken up in a grunt filled limp, with Zack using a hand and leaning on a building for support. Blood had poured from his forehead and nostrils like a hose as he leaned.

“Huff, huff…this really is bad. I’m in this state from just a few hits. The pain is terrible…I need to take some drugs–” As if suddenly hearing himself, Zack had smacked himself across the face with his own hand. “No…don’t think about that shit now.”

His expression had become colder and filled with resolve.

“...I have to kill them, to make things easier for Nathan’s girl,” Zack remarked as he wiped the blood that obscured his vision.

  WHAM!

Out of nowhere, Zack had found himself crashing through the walls of the building he leaned on at the hands of a super soldier.

“Criminal scum!” Pinning Zack on the ground and laying punches into his jaw, the super soldier berated. “You’re dead!”

  WHACK!

The pressure never ended there for the criminal, as while getting his face pummeled, Zack’s head was treated like a football at the hands of another super soldier who darted up.

His jaw tightened and his eyebrows furrowed as his head jerked to the side courtesy of the kick, veins manifested themselves on Zack’s forehead.

  BOOM!

Tearing apart a chunk of the building, Zack had released a violent blast upon his enemies. Results were certainly granted from his attack as the two soldiers who assaulted him were strewn across the ground, burned and without their limbs.

“Huff, huff…urgh,” Grunting and uttering noise from his panting lips, Zack had limped out of the demolished building. “Why are there…super soldiers…everywhere?”

“Hey, Zack. We caught up to ya,” Walking up and accompanied by several of his weaker super soldier allies, Mohawk had called out. “Looks like you aren’t doing too hot, huh? That means you won’t be running around and shit, huh?”

“Everywhere I go…you’re always there,” Zack muttered. “Bloodthirsty bastard…”

“Huff, You don’t have any friggin friends to help you,” Mohawk remarked as he silently wheezed. “Noone’s going to save you from the shit I’m going to do to you.”

“...You wanna see who my goddamned friend is!?” Zack yelled as he raised his hand in the air, his glove illuminating an orange radiance. “This is my friend! Right here–”

  Ftt!

His hand had suddenly jerked forward, attracting his eyes to the seemingly rebelling limb. A searing heat crawled through his arm as Zack witnessed a blade sticking through just underneath his wrist. It was not any ordinary blade, as the metal was coated in a bright yellow hue.

Standing behind him was Twintails, who had held the blade, before dragging it through the right side of his arm and removing it.

He gazed at his hand, which barely kept its connection with the arm and hung to the side by a thread, with a wide eyed, dumbfounded expression.

“Haha! Nice!” Mohawk yelled with a delighted grin.

“Got him with the superheated knife,” Twintails remarked as she leaped backwards, gaining distance from the criminal. “I saved your ass again, Mohawk.”

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

“Yeah, yeah,” Mohawk replied. “So, how do you feel now?”

Zack simply gazed at his hand – the audible hissing of his burned hissing, the sight of his charred exposed bones, and stabbing sensation of his hand being reduced to the state it was in – and his expression had finally cracked.

  “AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!”

Lilith had continued her spree, slashing any super soldiers she had come across while she kept running without ceasing. Like a character in a movie or play, Lilith’s actions were continued to be spectated by the developer.

“Hmm, she’s fatally injuring a few, but she’s just incapacitating most of the soldiers with her katana,” The developer noticed as he rubbed the chin of his unamused face. “I suppose that’s the right decision for her level of strength…but that’s still boring.”

“She’s also running around with no clear motive or destination,” The NPC remarked. “It looks like she’s prioritizing her primary goal.”

“Sigh, I like the strategy, but that’s not going to make everyone else any less of a threat,” The developer replied. “I do like risks though, so we’ll see how things play out.”

Witnessing the lack of super soldiers around her, Lilith had taken a quick break by a park. She had stuck her hand in her pocket, taking her smartphone out.

“...It’s twelve thirty now, huh?” Lilith muttered before putting back her device. “It’s time to do it, now.”

Staying no further in the park, Lilith had taken off once again.

Ada had continued walking, surrounded by her bodyguards, without a care in the world. Her carefree attitude had voiced itself in rhythmic hums, despite the ruined buildings and deceased people strewn around.

“Damn, look how much infrastructure they destroyed. It’s going to take hundreds of millions just to fix all this,” Gazing around the damaged environment, Nolan remarked. “What a massive waste of money.”

“Well, some of these buildings did need a design update,” Ada replied. “I always think we should knock some of them down when I go out. The criminals may have done us a favor.”

“Ah, as expected of the madam,” Leon complimented. “You’re always finding an opportunity in everything.”

“Yes, yes…praise me more,” Haughtily flashing her hair, Ada remarked with a smile.

  Tap, tap, tap…

The sudden and rhythmic taps had interrupted their playful banter as Ada and her men had shifted their attention. The taps had gotten louder and Ada’s eyes widened after witnessing the source.

“Hah, no way. Who would have thought you’d show up of all people,” Revealing herself from an alleyway and greeted by Ada, Olivia had approached. “Hey, parasite. How is it going?”

“Oh ho, it’s the bitch!” Frank remarked with a maniacal grin. “I was hoping you would have shown yourself. Well done–huh?”

Their carefree nature around Olivia had suddenly morphed into widened eyes, as out of that same alleyway were four super soldiers, as recognized by their uniform.

“What the…?” Leon remarked, bewildered by the involuntary body twitching and audible groans of the super soldiers. Their eyes had wandered all over, as if restless and uncontrolled.

“...Attack,” She only uttered one word, and by Olivia’s orders, the super soldiers had suddenly lunged towards her enemies.

“RRRAHHHHH!!!” With a scream that came from their throats, the super soldiers had lunged towards them. The bodyguard trio had also matched their intensity, leaving their president’s side to rush the soldiers.

“Urgh!” Although clashing strikes, the super soldiers had violently kept attacking like a group of mindless animals. Ada’s men had quickly found themselves on the defensive as they prioritized evading the soldiers’ surprisingly quick and powerful attacks.

“Guh!” Nolan grunted as he frantically bent his body to avoid their blows.

“Were the super soldiers this tough!?” Leon remarked as he parried their strikes. “I don’t remember them being so strong.”

“You’re worrying about that stupid shit, Leon!?” Frank yelled as the color of his skin had morphed into silver, the strikes of the soldiers clanging on his body. “I’m trying to figure out why the hell these damned idiots are protecting that trash!”

“...Olivia, you must have done something to them, right?” With a cold demeanor, Ada had turned her direction to Olivia and asked. “Is it some kind of poison you used?”

“...You don’t need to know,” Olivia muttered. “Come on out…”

The ground beneath the bodyguards’ feet had become darkened as a tiny shadow had emerged. As the shadow grew larger, they frantically turned their attention upwards.

  BOOM!

Tremoring and cratering the ground, a new super soldier had made a grand entrance.

“Urgh!” Being blasted away by the force of him crashing down, they all grunted at the fact.

“Huh? Wait, wait, wait!” Ada yelled with a dropped jaw at the sight of the super soldier. “How the hell are you here…Cryostasis!?”

He never responded to Ada’s question, nor did he seem to acknowledge her existence – his face had been rather relaxed, and there was no light in his eyes…as if he wasn’t even conscious.

“Tsk, isn’t that guy supposed to be dead!?” Nolan questioned. “How is he–”

The dead eyed Cryostasis had suddenly disappeared from everyone’s field of vision. A look of surprise flushed across everyone’s face as he appeared by Frank’s side.

  “Shit–”

  WHAM!

Cryostasis swiped his arm onto Frank’s back, and his allies watched with shock as he was blasted through the walls of multiple buildings. Cryostasis didn’t even gaze at his victim, as his expressionless eyes kept to the ground.

“Damn it! What did this bitch–” Before Nolan and Leon could even attack, they were suddenly attacked by the three super soldiers. They were all occupied.

The special neurotoxin is working well… Olivia pondered before she turned her gaze on the surprised Ada. Now…it’s your chance, Lilith.

Frank had been blasted away and her other men were currently in a heated battle against seemingly controlled soldiers. Ada was by herself, and overwhelmed with shock at the sudden situation.

Appearing out of nowhere, was Lilith. She had set herself behind Ada, her knees bent and her sword set to be slashed. There was no hesitation as the blade of her katana rushed towards Ada’s neck.

  KRRNNG!

Her blade’s momentum had suddenly stopped on what appeared to be an azure blue illumination which formed an outline around Ada’s body. It felt as though Lilith had struck steel as her sword shuddered in her arms upon impact.

“H-Huh!?” Both Lilith and Ada uttered in a confused unison at the sight. Olivia too had a jaw dropped expression at Lilith’s apparent failure.

W-What the hell is this!? Lilith internally questioned. I can’t slash her!?

“I-I saved you, madam!” Nolan yelled as he looked towards the two women. “Get the hell away from her– guh!”

Punishing Nolan for being distracted and getting ragdolled, he had gotten sucker punched in the jaw by a super soldier. Witnessing her mission thwarted, Lilith had jumped several meters backwards.

“No way…even though I was so close…” Lilith muttered with dejection on her face. “Why does…this always happen!?”

“L-Lilith…don’t give up!” Olivia encouraged. “We still have a chance!”
