82 - Eightport - Cali

  Hey Diary,

Yep, today was a very busy day.

We went to the king. Maeve showed off her paperwork. Luke showed off his gold hair and knowledge of water. Maki showed off his class, and I showed off my magic specialty. The king was impressed, and gave us all fancy cards saying to listen to us and not arrest us.

  Hooray.

Then we had lunch at a fancy sandwich restaurant. I didn’t know sandwiches could be fancy, but Maeve and Echo tracked down a place that made them. And yeah, it was a pretty good sandwich. Expensive, but good.

Then Luke went to his job, Echo and Maeve went to the beach, and Maki went with me outside the city to nine different farms. I told all the animals to not panic during earthquakes, and was paid enough for at least three more sandwiches at that restaurant. Or, like, fifty sandwiches not from that restaurant.

I shouldn’t complain about that. It was an experience. We had fun. The food was good. Just because I feel like I could make an equally good sandwich for like a third of the cost at home doesn’t mean it was a waste of money.

Anyways, yeah, while I was outside the city I tried catching as many wild animals as I could in my charm magic to tell the earthquakes aren’t scary. I caught a couple thousand; either my range is bigger than what I thought or there’s a serious rodent problem around here.

I realized that I still have the super boost rune drawn in the back of this book. Luke had to burn his book, so I should probably do the same. I mean, if I ever use it again I’ll probably be in a ton of trouble. And I don't even know what would happen if anyone else carved it somewhere and activated it.

But… I kinda don't want to? No one will ever read this diary. And no one who sees the rune will know what it does. So it’s safe there.

  Right?

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

  Right.

Besides, this is a nice book. I don't want to ruin it by tearing a page out.

I know. I'll add a few extra lines to the rune. That way if anyone copies it, it’ll just go wrong and be fine.

  Yeah. That’s what I’ll do.

  Signing off,

  .

The Watcher of Tiros watched Jasmine design houses. They certainly weren't normal houses, but that gave them charm.

They had all the correct rooms, proper ventilation, and working plumbing, which were the three main requirements. Then the Chosen fairy girl added glowing mushrooms for light, moss for carpets, and some kind of bacteria for food waste disposal. Everything that could be a living thing, was. She made every building she designed into its own little private ecosystem.

Calvin, working next to the girl, saw some new detail of hers and glanced at Bonnie with an impressed look on his face.

Emmy was monitoring the simulations for anything that could go wrong. She’d spotted a few things, but nothing to do with Jasmine’s work.

Reluctantly, Bonnie admitted to herself that she was impressed with the fairy.

Suddenly an alarm went off. Jasmine flinched while Calvin sat up. Bonnie pulled up the alert, letting everyone see it.

  • WARNING: Earthquake of magnitude 8.5 has occurred near Stoneford in Owonyan.

  •

“Eight point five?” Emmy asked, eyes wide.

Calvin gave Bonnie an unamused look. “You’re still using the Richter scale?”

“Hey, until someone down there invents a new one, this is what I’ve got,” Bonnie snapped.

Jasmine hunched into herself. “Is- Is that big?”

“Yeah, anything above a seven and you aren’t able to stand,” Emmy explained. “Eight or above, and buildings come down.”

“Oh.” The girl looked at the warning with wide eyes.

“What’s the prediction for the big one?” Calvin asked, subconsciously taking Emmy’s hand.

Bonnie pulled up a report and sent it over. “Keep in mind the continental plate is snapping. So. At the epicenter? Thirteen.”

The two nekos stared at the report, ears and fur going completely flat.

  “That’s… bad?” Jasmine guessed.

Emmy swallowed hard. “Yeah… Yeah, that’s pretty bad.”
